The Pitcairn descendants still carry mutineer names and mixed heritage, with European features and a corruption of English dialect among themselves. After Fletcher Christian arrived with mutineers and Tahitians, island life turned violent, yet by 1808 the settlement was noted for its model communal system established by Alexander Smith later known as John Adams. Today 160 residents live peaceably, practicing a communal style while private property exists, and fines are settled by communal work and a shared dinner. Two American sailors briefly lived there, one marrying a native, and one returning years later with his son who also joined the community.
