It describes plain lifestyle, strong German roots, devotion to work and worship, and a small population of about 4000 seen between Bird-in-Hand and Intercourse.
Two Bristol Coast Guard ships aided the efforts after the 10 000 ton tanker Fort Mercer split in two off Cape Cod. The 180 foot Spar guided the convoy to Newport and Winslow E Kelsey captained the 64 foot harbor tug to New London. A dangerous northeaster caused the break.
The 1952 Fourth of July committee elected officers at a Friday YMCA meeting. Plans to host the New England firemen muster on the Fourth were boosted with an invitation to the New England Veteran Firemen’s League. The league will meet in Marblehead in May to decide the muster site in Bristol.
Ash Wednesday begins Lent with ashes at St Marys Our Lady of Mount Carmel and St Elizabeths for children and adults. Weekly Friday prayers and a March five Sunday Lent series at First Congregational Church. Trinity Episcopal holds Ash Wednesday masses and weekly talks by visiting clergy. St Michaels lists Wednesday Lent talks leading to April 9 Pilgrimage Play.
Charter reform won by a 5 to 1 margin as 501 of 798 votes favored writing a new charter. 94 opposed. A $2,500 appropriation passed 402 to 111. Turnout reached 20 percent of eligible voters. Certificates due March 10. canvassers to compile official tabulations tonight.
Collins & 4ikman Corp grants four year scholarships to Rhode Island School of Design to be used mainly for employees children with a community option if no eligible employee offspring exist. 12 students to matriculate after four years under the program and similar scholarships planned for North Carolina State College School of Textiles in Raleigh and the Philadelphia Textile Institute in Philadelphia.
Cub Pack 5 held its annual Blue and Gold dinner at St Michael's Parish House. The event honored den mothers with certificates of appreciation presented by Thomas C. Brown, pack chairman, to seven recipients led by Mrs Jean Brown and others.
