More than fifty Bristol WPA workers who volunteered for a snow removal project say they were promised 50 cents an hour for six hours over two days but received 44 cents and no extra pay. Officials deny control over WPA pay and direct inquiries to Providence.
Town Council and Budget Committee will review the 1940 municipal budget at Burnside Memorial building. Council President J Floyd Huestis says department heads must present to the council, not the finance board, to keep progress steady. An estimated 15000 dollars for Gotham Novelty Company equipment move from Freeport, Ill. to town is under consideration as part of the annual financial meeting agenda.
Scout master Irving M Porter Jr appointed an emergency patrol to aid in any catastrophe. Named to patrol were William McCaw Dean Armstrong Kenneth Sturdevant Herbert Sylvester and Ernest Meiggs. William McCaw received a merit badge for reading. Team one led by Dean Armstrong Kenneth Sturdevant Roswell S Bosworth Jr Stephen Costa and Raymond Francis captured the major share of awards.
Rotary Club members met at Holmes House to hear a Chicago origin broadcast on Employer, Employee and the Public. The session, part of Rotary Observance Week, followed by an over the air Q and A and a local post program discussion. James G. Carns Jr. helped form the group with several local leaders in attendance.
Alpha Delta Epsilon Sorority met at Miss Mary Rus on Congregational street with Miss Antoinette Rucci acting as vice president in the president’s absence. discussion covered future meeting sites and plans for a March fundraiser ride. next meeting set for March 7 at Miss Caroline Salzano’s Mt Hope Avenue.
Bristol falls short of its $600 quota for the annual Boy Scout Finance Campaign with only half subscribed. W Fred Williams appeals to past donors and Bristol residents, blaming bad weather for weak returns and urging final, missed contributors to send their gifts to him for proper credit.
Members of Hope Circle Daughters of Isabella plan a social at K of C Hall on State Street with a chowder and clam cake benefit March 1 supervised by chairlady Mrs Thomas H Bosrnes and committee. A separate annual banquet is set for March 31 and a benefit whist produced several prize winners including Mrs Joseph Warren and Mrs Arthur J Duffy.
The Bristol Train of Artillery held its 90th Washington ball at the State armory last night in a grand, festival atmosphere with about 400 attendees. Col Edwin A Godfrey and Miss Louise Brechin led the grand march. numerous military officers and social leaders attended, with an exhibition drill, medal awards, and intermission entertainment from Elsa Greenwood dancers.
Gittelman Plant will start operations in Warren on Monday with a formal inspection by state and town officials planned for tomorrow A reception is set from 1 to 4 pm The plant near Crown Fastener will manufacture children and adult sportswear beach wear and snow suits at peak output 100 workers and 60 sewing machines are in place with 50 workers beginning Monday morning and full strength expected in a few months
Enthusiasm runs high at the Bristol plant as Collins and Aikman announces a Ca-Vel Ball for April 13 at the Hotel Warren. It marks the first such event for local workers and is expected to become an annual affair with 1100 employees across three Bristol factories. The ball is sponsored by the Girls and Men's clubs with a general committee led by Mrs Edra Harris and Joseph Marshall.
The Rev Frederick W Knickrehm pastor of Haven Methodist Episcopal Church East Providence will preach at a Union Lenten service at First Baptist Church Sunday at 7 30 p.m. Special music by the Junior Choir of St Michael's directed by Walter Angell with Angell as organist. Knickrehm a former All Western college football guard with USC is noted as a leading Rhode Island Methodist clergyman and has spoken here before at a union service.
Mr and Mrs Domenick Romano of 43 Prospect Street announce the engagement of their daughter Lilan to Vincent Pasqua son of Mr and Mrs Mariano Pasqua of 47 Garfield Avenue Bristol.
