Bristol County Shellfish Dealers Protest Refinery Plan

All eight Bristol County commercial shellfish dealers protested Gov. Roberts and Officials over the Jamestown refinery project. Telegrams to Notte, Rego, and others urged a change in refinery policy and warned of impacts on 275 fishermen and a $3.5 million shellfish industry. A new association formed at Eastern Seafood Corp with Gilbert Pontes as president.

Governor Submits Budget Proposal For Rhode Island

Governor Roberts presents a 1959 budget totaling 79,400,090 dollars in his annual message to the Rhode Island assembly. The plan projects 112,205,628 dollars in revenue against 111,684,804 dollars in expenditures, forecasts a 500,000 dollar surplus, and includes nine tax increases including a two cent hike on cigarettes and gasoline to raise about 10,160,000 dollars. He also proposes state takeover of the Charles V. Chapin Hospital, with funds to cover operational expenses.

Large Delegation Expected At Scout Banquet Sat

A large group of Boy Scouts leaders committeemen parents and friends are expected at the banquet tomorrow night at the National Guard Armory marking the 45th anniversary of scouting in Bristol. Norman A Belmore banquet chairman said guests will include scouts and leaders from Troops One local district Nar ragansett Council officials and clergy. Two more observance events follow: the Eagle Scout reunion banquet on Sunday Feb 23 and the Kingsmen anniversary next month.

Plan Basic Rocket Class for Bristol Rhode Island

A free ten week program for high school students will teach rocket fundamentals at the U S Army Reserve Center in Bristol. Led by Wilfred J Tetreault and a Bristol Rhode Island Rocket Society advisory board, the plan includes safety, propulsion, design, and launch phases with potential industrial partners and a supervised final firing. Enrollment capped at 35, applications by post card, and parental registration required at first session.
