Spar to Enter Arctic Operations Again This Year

The Bristol based Coast Guard Cutter Spar will participate in Arctic operations this year, per Rear Adm Edwin J Roland commander of the First Coast Guard District. It plans to depart May 15 for outfitting at Curtis Bay Maryland and return by Oct 1. The ship previously circumnavigated the continent and charted a deep water passage across the Arctic Ocean. The project may proceed under MS Ts auspices, as last year, though confirmation is pending. Captain Charles V Cowing could not be reached. Governor Dennis J Roberts recently honored him with a Rhode Island commendation. Buoy work last year was done by buoy tenders from Portland Rockland and Boston.
