Army 2nd Lt. Robert Ruggiero, son of Mr. and Mrs. John A. Ruggiero of 97 Bradford Street, was cited for meritorious service as a staff officer with the Neutral Nations Repatriation Commission in Korea. He entered the Army in July 1952, arrived in Korea in June, is a 1952 graduate of the University of Rhode Island, and belongs to Phi Sigma Kappa.
Mrs. Charles B. Rockwell Jr chairs the advanced gifts committee for Children's Friend and Service in Rhode Island as the drive aims to raise 349500 to replace the Lakeside Home in Warwick. Speakers include Council President Joseph F Bruno Chairman Anthony Pinhero Frank J Murphy and Richard G Stoehr with Michael Ferrara producing the program and Dr Maynard Shulman assisting.
The Bristol Highlands Improvement Association will hold its annual winter party tonight at the Midway Steak and Lobster House. The organizing committee is led by Mrs. Albert V. Pearson and includes Mrs. Gilbert C. Hardy Mrs. Richard G. Stoehr Mrs. Clarence Smith Mrs. E. Stuart Smith Mrs. Francis Commette Mrs. H. Wheaton Thomas and Mrs. Russell S. Bray.
After 75 years Number Please ends when The New England Telephone and Telegraph consolidates Bristol County into one exchange with dial service in June 1955. A 67 foot concrete steel building will be erected on Everett Street Warren to house the dial apparatus. Extended area service will place Beigton in Providence local call range at the same time.
The town’s beach committee approved leasing a Colt Estate site on Narragansett Bay for a public beach and picnic area at Colt Drive. The five year lease to the town from Industrial National Bank carries $600 annual rent and tax abatement for the beach area, with council action expected Monday and a potential beach commission to plan improvements for summer.
Bristol residents surpass previous Polio Fund records with donations from school drives, auctions, and community events. The campaign totals top $4952.69 with final events expected to push beyond $5000, led by chairwoman Mrs. Jean Tappero and a key food sale by Gladys M. Brightman committee.
Town Council President Joseph F. Brugo urged schools churches social and fraternal groups and residents to support the RL Heart Association February Heart Fund drive in Bristol. Mrs Earl G Sturdevant is local chairman for the campaign seeking funds for local state and national programs aimed at heart and circulation disease prevention and treatment.
