In Paris during a bitter cold spell Abbe Pierre mobilizes volunteers to shelter homeless families and workers. A radio appeal followed by police sanctuary promises spurred a large community response with blankets hot soup and shelter. The effort aims to curb freezing deaths and address housing shortages long term.
Civic Industries Committee will meet Thursday at 8 p.m. in the council chambers to review a progress report for the town council. Anthony Pinhero said a representative from the advertising firm will present brochure and newspaper ad layouts for national business journals. The first newspaper phase could begin almost immediately after layouts are approved, with a brochure costing about 1250 for 5000 copies and a mailing list being prepared with aid from the U I Development Council.
Mrs. Earl G. Sturdevant, chair of the 1954 Heart Fund in Bristol, announced a committee to support the February drive with the slogan Help Your Heart Fund Help Your Heart. The fund backs research education and community service by the Rhode Island Heart Association. literature and envelopes are sent to residents.
The Bristol Women’s Club outlined upcoming projects at a regular gathering in Guiteras House. Program chair Mrs. Howard L. House presided. Hospitality was led by Mrs. Edward J. Newbold with assistance from Miss Agnes Beavis, Mrs. Gilman Gay, and Mrs. George McCarthy. pours were by Mrs. Earl G. Stur devant and Mrs. John Sullivan.
The Red Cross Blood Donor Committee reports progress for the Big Day on February 23. The Bloodmobile from Connecticut with doctors and attendants will be at Andrews Memorial School from 1 to 5 30 PM. Lt Commander Wilbur S Doe and the Coast Guard cutter Spar plan to have volunteers in port that day. Local committees, Boy Scouts, National Guard, teachers and school staff are mobilizing volunteers to donate blood.
A new volleyball league opens at the YMCA on Thursday with teams from Carr Manufacturing Corp US Rubber Bristol Manufacturing Corp National Guard and the Young Men's Club set to play. Hector Massa physical director will guide the league and invites more groups to join. Referees Benjamin Hazen and Joseph Murgo will oversee games each Thursday night.

First Congregational Church Summer Bazaar features Mrs Lester Gurney as general chairman with numerous coordinators and table chairmen including Mrs Albert Newton Mrs Joseph Vital Jr Mrs Howard House Mrs Raymond Gruenwald Mrs Parker Ludden and others guiding activities from bake shop to children's stores and country store setup for charity.
The first U S special weapons defense unit trained in the country received certificates after a nine week course in bacteriological radiological and chemical warfare. Robert G Raymond presented awards to Paul Jillson Earl Cabral Robert Brown Malcolm Clark Manuel Falco Robert Huey Albert Hopper Manuel Lawrence Mrs Dorothy Rupp Charles Loring Frederick Rounds Laura Balzano John Stone and Mrs Muriel Stone. The unit will demonstrate to state CD and tour with a mobile unit teaching detection and neutralizing gases and radiation.
The Bristol town council approved the beach committee’s recommended site north of Asylum Road despite complaints about alternatives and a new proposal for land nearer town. A $600 yearly lease for the Colt Drive strip was discussed, with objections over safety and access, and plans to deed beach-front land to Bristol were explored.
Fire Commissioner Jerome Donovan announced a committee to revise the town’s 1900 fire ordinance. Chief Oscar A. Rishe and five others will study amendments to modernize the department and improve operations. Donovan supports tenure for the fire chief and proposes a competitive examination process.
The Altar Society of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church will host its annual dinner dance this coming Saturday at the Midway Steak and Lobster House. Co chairs are Mrs. Frank Del Toro and Mrs. Frank Malefronte with several aides and ex-officio members assisting.
The 1954 March of Dimes drive stands at 5041.99 dollars with additional returns expected from area plants and a Friday food sale by Mrs. Gladys M. Brightman and her committee. Local chairman Mrs. Charles Tappero says books close on receipt of further worker donations. The polio auction committee, led by Mrs. Raymond J. Mak, reports a highly successful drawing last week with Mrs. E Hugh Holmes and team members assisting.
Parishioners of St Marys Church assist in planning a Penny Social to be held Tuesday evening February 23 in the church auditorium. Members of St Marys Mothers Club and Hope Circle aid the committee. The event will be open for ticket distribution in the afternoon with prizes including a bridal doll with a $25 dowry.
Lawson-Rajola Chapter DAV requested a $500 appropriation in the April budget to finance the state DAY convention in June. The council rejected the request, noting surprise at public funds for the event and planning to compare bids and programs with other towns.
Rogers Free Library trustees request 400 dollars in their annual report to the town council to finance a fire escape for the library building. The plan follows ongoing safety discussions since the children’s department opened earlier, with bids to be sought after initial contractor specs.
