Tomorrow marks the Chinese New Year with fireworks banquets and parades in the old town. Celebrations will occur whether in Communist China or Formosa with Chang K. S. noted as part of the scene.

The Bristol County Dental Society announced the winners of its National Children's Dental Health Day poster contest. Top local prizes of 25 U.S. Savings Bonds went to Thomas Goff Jr. Angela Allaire and Charles Oulette, with honorable mentions for a long list of students from Reynolds Guileras Colt Memorial High School and area addresses.
Karleton C. Johnson, veteran of 20 years of work across Africa, will speak to the men of the First Congregational Church tomorrow night at 8 p.m. in Guitars House. He worked among Africans transitioning from tribal life to a modern industrial city.

A Warren explosion at 6 pm destroyed the Heywood home at 463 Water Street and injured Kenneth Heywood who is hospitalized. Two nearby houses also suffered blasts as fire and police fought the overnight incidents. Nar Ragansett Electric crews investigated while officials noted the area’s shell-filled ground and gas pressure as possible causes.
The Daughters of Isabella Circle No. 70 met at the K of C Hall and set a February 15 Valentine Whist with co chairmen Louise DeLaha and Pauline Langello. They voted to support St Mary’s Penny Social and host weekly clam chowder and bake sales during Lent. The 87th annual banquet is scheduled for March 21 with Joanna McClure and Margaret Connery as co chairmen and past regents assisting.
The Goldenrod Troop met in DeWolf Chapel and awarded prizes for record candy sales to Elizabeth Ann Capone Judy Borges Geraldine Gallaher Patricia Nappi Andrea Nappi and a tie between Matilda Langone and Mary McCarthy. Twenty girls and four leaders plan to see Lady Baden Powell Saturday at the Veterans Memorial Auditorium Providence.
U.S. textile giant C and A slash five percent wages at non-union plants after contract talks with Collins and Aikman and the CIO Textile Workers Union keep negotiating without final terms. Bristol and Barrington plants remain under union representation. The CIO union says it would strike rather than accept the cuts.
The Kingsmen Bugle and Drum Corps report over 200 honorary members as officials push to speed up renewals. Many who received 1954 cards have not mailed the membership fee, delaying credit for this year. New names added include Alice B. Wyatt, Lewis Rego, Salvatore Massano, J Francis Connell, Albert Emery, and others.
A March of Dimes food sale will be held Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Gladys Shoppe on Hope and Bradford Streets. Rep. Gladys M. Brightman chairs the committee with numerous volunteers assisting. Donors to date include Maureen Murphy, Joseph Robinson, Joseph Correia, Rose Sousa, and others.
Joseph Barboza Jr the St Michael s Church organist and choir director spoke to the parish Ladies Auxiliary about liturgical music in their Holmes House meeting. A Phi Beta Kappa Boston University College of Music graduate he is studying for his masters degree and traced church music s role to express meaning and beauty. He cited the 1549 Canterbury archbishop proposal of congregational singing. Hostesses named by Mrs Calbraith Perry included Mrs Russell Southwick Mrs Samuel Wardivell Mrs John Velleca and Mrs John Wall with Mrs Henry Wood presiding.
Engaged are Marie Elizabeth Perry of 996 Hope Street and Vernon Francis Huestis after a Honolulu betrothal announcement. Marie teaches at St Andrew's Priory and is Rhode Island College of Education graduate. Vernon is University of Missouri trained and works with J F Huestis Inc. A June wedding is planned. Also announced is the engagement of Jeanette Irene Lemaire to Leo Francis LaRiviera. Jeanette is Bristol High and URI graduate and teaches at Randall Holden School. Leo is a Burrillville High graduate, five year Marine Corps veteran, and URI senior.
Bristol would receive half of state auto registration license fees and gas taxes under a bill by Senator Kingsley. The funds would be spent by the highway department for Bristol streets, with a separate resolution to study widening Metacom Avenue and Ferry Road to four lanes. The study aims to report by March first to justify safer, busier traffic routes.
Manuel M. Lima was installed as president of the St. Elizabeth's Holy Name Society at a Sunday banquet in the parish hall. The ceremony followed Holy Communion at mass and the reception of 18 new members. Others installed included John Pacheco as vice president Christian O. Mello as secretary and Manuel E. Bento as treasurer.
Fifty members of the Holy Name Society of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church met for a Friday session. They voted to donate 150 to the church and outlined a march ride with committee chair Frank Misérandino, assisted by Robert Hayes and Anthony Russo. Fortunato Caruso chaired the monthly committee and noted plans for joint Bristol Warren meetings with Smeeeros town as host.
