Bristol man admits killing three in Kingston murder case

James Rego Mello walked into Providence police on Wednesday claiming Bristol as his residence and surrendered. He said he killed William Rhodes in self defence in Kingston last Saturday night and denied killing Gustave and Oscar Olsen whose mutilated bodies were found Sunday. Mello described leaving a shack with the Olsen brothers to go to Westerly, then returning to the Kingston station building where Rhodes counted money and the Olsen brothers lay dead. He says a struggle occurred when Rhodes struck at him with an axe and he fired. Police found no nearby voices heard. The crime's motive appears to be money from the Olsen brothers. Mello is a local resident with ties to the late Joseph Mello.
