Soldiers honor fallen comrade with memory Mass gift
The buddies of Pfc. John Quinta, killed in action July 18, collected money to fund Masses for his memory at St. Elizabeth's Church. His uncle, Arthur Furtado, received the funds and a letter from Army Chaplain Barrett Trier praising Quinta. Col Irving Hunizker helped organize the fund. Quinta was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart.

Bristol Firemen Fight Blazes Across Busy Week
Bristol Fire Department faced a string of incidents including a near miss at Samuel Wardwell’s corner Hope Street and Poppasquash Road where a chimney fire endangered wooden shingles amid a stiff wind. Fire crews quickly contained the roof blaze with booster pumps and regular hose, causing minimal damage. Later a two alarm wood fire north of Juniper Hill Cemetery near Sherry Avenue Chestnut Street and Metacom Avenue burned a large area with unclear origin possibly smoker or arson, but no property damage reported. A third blaze at Domingos Rodrigues 215 State Street rear of his saloon caused smoke and some damage but not serious. Chief Moses Moore oversaw precautions protecting nearby buildings.
