Fifty Four Forty Slogan and Oregon Boundary War Origin
The Forty four fifty slogan is linked to Senator William Allen of Ohio in 1844 during the Oregon boundary dispute with Great Britain. It urged British recognition of the Pacific coast as American to the latitude 54 30 north or risk war. The 1846 treaty settled the matter at the forty ninth parallel to Vancouver Island.
