Historic mansion burns as firemen battle city blaze
Fire alarm sounded at 5 15 as three fire companies rushed to a mansion fire near Metacom and Mt Hope avenues. Deep snow hindered progress and lack of water doomed extinguishment, though barns and sheds escaped. The four story colonial house, about 60 feet square, stood center of a large land tract, with flames driven onto surrounding structures before the mansion collapsed. Firefighters led by Chief Engineer Wilson and Assistants Magee and Ashton saved nearby outbuildings while the mansion burned to ruins. Weather and wind intensified the blaze, but crews remained at the scene until danger to the barns passed. The article notes nearby paintings and a coach associated with Col 8 P Colt.
