Bristol Masons elected Herbert E. S. Clark Jr. master of St Alban's Lodge No 6 during its 151st year. Officers named include M Stuart Barr and John W Church Jr. Guest speaker Albert P. Ruerat addressed 150 attendees on government and public officials, with toastmaster John McGovern.
President Truman nominated former U S Senator Edward S Leahy to the Federal District Court in Providence to succeed Judge Hartigan who was nominated for the First Circuit Court of Appeals Hartigan would replace Judge Mahoney who will retire due to disability The nominations have the support of Attorney General McGrath Senator Green and Senator Pastor Hearings by the Senate Judiciary Committee are expected to begin after the current session starts in Congress
In a brief ceremony on Hope Street the cornerstone of the new Rockwell Elementary School was placed. Donor Charles B. Rockwell announced a $100,000 gift for construction while the project, designed by George Meady and Wallis E Howe, proceeds with brick walls rising and three classrooms plus a recreation room planned.
In Bristol and Barrington Rhode Island workers at Collins and Aikman Corp. voted 797 against the union and 299 in favor with 96 percent turnout. Ballots were counted at Masonic Hall with NLRB officials and TWUA observers present.
