Bristol city officials report an estimated 71 000 holiday long distance calls expected with a 19 operator team and supervision to handle peak periods. Officials warn delays may occur due to unusually heavy volume and longer call times across five state area during Christmas Eve and Day.
The PTA plans a Thursday cookie and ice cream distribution for elementary students at Reynolds Walley Oliver Taft and Burton schools. Chairs Mrs Salvatore Rossi and a committee of over 50 mothers organize the hospitality with Sidney Sacalbers Mira Anthony Russo and Mrs Benjamin Lucy among leaders.
Norman E. Benard announced his resignation from the Town Council to accept a civil service appointment in the Investigation Unit of the Depart ment of Employment Security. The council will name a successor after action on his resignation at the January 8 meeting.
Janitors in Bristol public schools, on call 24 hours, seek a $500 yearly raise from $33.50 weekly, bringing pay to about $43. Charles E. Burns and James T. Pierse, president and secretary, urge taxpayers' support and invite inspections to show the workload from winter heating duties to summer cleaning chores.

A plan from Barrington High School’s Student Council leads to a December carol night with 200 students from Barrington Warren and Bristol. They will sing at Barrington Hall, Warren Town Hall, and Colt Memorial High School, with bus transport by local drivers and possible annual repeats.
Saint Michael's Church presents a four part Christmas program at Colt Auditorium directed by John Anthony. Junior choir and Saint Michaelettes perform solos and ensemble numbers with Bach Gounod and traditional carols. Choir members include sopranos altos tenors and basses with assistants Emily Perry Cecilia Perry Mervyn Clay and Walter Young aiding junior groups.
A survey of foreign missions reveals varied holiday observances with some celebrating Christmas while others decline. The Chinese and Soviet allied embassies report no social events this season, while Hungary hints at a light ceremony for children.
Pfc. Raymond Chionchio aged 20 son of Giovanni and Donata Chionchio of Sherry Avenue has been wounded a second time in Korea. He recently recovered from a knee wound and was shot in the hip and foot on November 30 while with the Second Infantry Division. He is hospitalized at Murphy General Hospital in Waltham after being flown there for treatment. He enlisted in 1947. His brother Sgt. Eugene Chiotchio serves with a Marine transport unit in Korea, with other brothers having served in World War II.
