Highway Surveyor Joseph F Pannone urges residents to learn district numbers and follow the December collection schedule to avoid untidiness from early rubbish outs. He notes some areas already had rubbish out prematurely and stresses sticking to the published dates.
Corp Joseph Robert Medeiros 21 Marine Corps is reported wounded in action. He writes to his parents that the battlefield was terrible. He serves with the First Marine Division in Korea after earlier service in the Mediterranean. He joined the Marines in 1948 and is married to Arty Cordeiro.
Bristol civic and fraternal groups are urged to recruit volunteers for Civil Defense. Col Hambrick will contact heads of local groups to seek aid in enlisting volunteers for air raid wardens first aid clerical staff and auxiliary services. A Key Personnel meeting at the American Legion Hall on Friday December 22 will include Lt Werner E Colin to enlist volunteers for CD duty.
The Bristol town council approves two side parking in the restricted Hope street area from December 11 to 31. David Ferris of the Bristol Business Civic Association states merchants in the Hope street shopping district will stay open every evening during the week of December 18 until 8 30.
State Senator Daniel G. Coggeshall switched on the Migsee street lighting on a Wednesday evening. Bristol Business Civil Association spearheaded the multi colored bulb display spanning Constitution to Franklin and along State street by Hope street. Public subscription funds the illumination with J William Wood as treasurer.
The Republican Town Committee will meet this evening in the Hotel Belvedere at 8 o'clock with several items on the docket. Chairman Frank J. Sylvia will preside. The group will review Treasurer John P. Marshall's annual report and nominate five executive committeemen. A nominating committee for a March local election slate will also be appointed. The committee supports Chairman Sylvia in efforts to regain town administration control.
Mr Bird outlines a major upgrade to Rhode Island textile plants with new machinery to boost quality and price competitiveness. He notes this requires worker retraining and questions Rhode Island workers about adapting to new methods while stressing team effort to avoid reliance on a union. A union representation vote is scheduled for December 20.
At the Bristol Civil League meeting, Anne Marie Bisbane was named arrangements head for the December 30 party at Alfred Rego’s Bristol Narrows home. A committee including Linda Correia Olga Lewis Alfred Zervis Rita Silvia and Mary Amaral will handle invites sent to Salve Regina College students New Bedford Textile Institute and the Pan American Club of Providence. Also attending will be Spanish Chancellor Pablo Descouzia.
Bristol senior high school presented Miss Jimmy a three act comedy by Jean Provence in Guiteras Memorial School auditorium. The show sparked hearty applause from about 276 spectators and will be repeated tonight at 8 15. Directed by Mrs M Theresa Donovan the production drew praise for its humor and staging. Ernest Cordeiro played Jimmy a stray junior from a nearby state university who becomes entangled in several prankish incidents involving a girl's dress for a fraternity initiation stunt.
The Bristol Planning Board and Bristol Zoning Board will meet in a joint session to seek a revision of the town zoning law. No meeting date set. secretary arrangements and a mutually satisfactory date are being coordinated. The recent talk focused on updating 1930 zoning provisions and improving enforcement power under the current building code.
