Christmas spirit has gripped Bristol with shoppers, excited children, and bright decorations. Main street and Wood Street line with illuminated trees while Colt Memorial School hosts a permanent manger scene. Shops and clubs display lights and Santa imagery, and trees wait to be adorned as the town embraces the season.
School Committeeman Anthony Pereira urged the town council to close Bradford Street from Central to Hope as a two to four week trial to see how it affects student safety between the Colt and Andrews buildings. The board took no action, opting to revisit after holidays.
Phoenix report quotes Police Chief Anthony J Ferrara defending two newly purchased police cars. He warned keeping old cars on the road to February would cause frequent repairs and flats, noting officer Mancer had two flats in one night. He urged speedy delivery to ensure town protection.
The Elmwood Terrace Improvement Association will hold its first annual Christmas party for children on Sunday at 2 pm at the DAV Hall on High Street. Secretary A Domenic Ruggieri announced the event saying the program opens with carols, followed by movies and a final appearance by Santa Claus.
Four teams the Royals Celtics Knicks and the Lakers compete in the Guiteras Junior High intramural basketball league. First week games Monday and Wednesday produced a 64 to 4 Royals win over the Knicks and a 17 to 4 Lakers victory over the Celtics. High scorers include Furtado Pley Merritt Manchester Bisbane and Martin. Standings show Lakers tied with Royals and Celtics tied with Knicks.
Coast Guard Cutter Spar, en route from the North Pole to Bristol, battles high seas and strong winds. Lt Norman P Ensrud says progress is halved and warns local children of possible delay, pledging all efforts to bring Santa to town for Santa Day. Ratberry Garden Club met Monday night at Mrs Philip Bodell's home on Poppa squash with Charles Boyd of Boyd's Wayside Gardens as speaker. He presented decorating ideas for Christmas and crafted several beautiful pieces. Gifts were exchanged among members. assistants included Mrs Edward Newbold, Mrs John Sullivan, and Mrs Charlotte Plaster. The next meeting is set for January 25 at Miss Ruby Blaisdell's home.
