Warnings of a powerful storm battered Bristol as high seas and strong southeast to southwest winds lashed the waterfront. Tides rose, small boats suffered damage or destruction, a skiff was saved by a diesel freight engine near the Town Creamery, and Coast Guard Chief Kreher reported no distress calls as waves crashed the docks.
A Coast Guard message from the cutter Spar says the ship has reached the North Pole and a shore party reports Santa Claus has gained winter quarters there. Santa asked for a ride aboard Spar to Bristol, hoping for a running start for his heavy sleigh. Further updates promised in Friday’s Phoenix.
Town council awarded the police car contract to Bristol Garage for two 6 cylinder Dodge sedans at 2 580 plus trade ins, beating Asselin Chevrolet and Town and Country Motors. Bidders argued over delivery times and vehicle type, with Asselin noting six cylinder vs V eight differences and potential $500 to $700 value gaps.
Michael A DeLeo has been notified by Italian Ambassador Manlio Brosio that he will receive one of Italy’s highest honors, the Italian Star of Solidarity first class, at the 8th annual dinner of the American Committee on Italian Migration in New York. The award honors his refugee relief and migration work and his role on Eisenhower era refugee committees.
M and R Sportswear Co has located in the former Howard Mfg Co building on Burnside St. The firm, producing girls sportswear, began operations last Monday and plans to expand facilities and staff over the next two months, with jobs to be filled largely by local people. Current employment exceeds 30, rising to 75 to 100 after expansion.
Floodme hosted a Knights of Columbus Bloodmobile event in front of the K of C Hall with about forty people donating. After donations, a breakfast of bacon and eggs and ham and trimmings was served. Committee members included Salvatore Attruia as chairman and Joseph Vierra, with Thomas Byrnes aiding.
