Dr J Whitcomb Brougher pastor of Tremont Temple Baptist Boston and famed as The Will Rogers of the American Pulpit visits Bristol for a humorous lecture Tuesday at 745 as the third event in the Men's Union speakers series at First Congregational Church. He is a noted Mason and Shriner with a long record in Royal Arch chapters and has drawn praise from Theodore Roosevelt and major newspapers for his blend of humor and earnest preaching.

Fire damages 55 State Street store. flames confined to upper structure

Fire gutted the Michael Jamiel building at 55 State Street with $6000 estimated loss, mostly uninsured. Fire Chief Robert J. Anderson credited prompt department response saving nearby wooden buildings as residents evacuated children and infants to safety.

Former local youth wins high honors at Boston

Harold Payson Jr a former resident of this town was named a Rhodes scholar by the Boston committee joining four others from New England He is now an ensign in the US Navy and serves aboard the US S S Louisville Payson graduated with honors from the Naval Academy class of 1931 and earlier attended St Pauls School Concord N H Morse Private School in town He earned a presidential appointment to the Naval Academy in 1926 and excelled in baseball crew water polo sailing and athletics while a midshipman.

Lavinia Guevremont was chosen patrol leader and Mary Walsh assistant patrol leader of the newly organized Girl Scout troop Birch No 1 meeting at John Post Reynolds School auditorium. The Community Revue Committee met at the Holmes House to review a 20 act pre show for the Pastime Theatre performance on Tuesday evening December 22. Andrew Iverson donated poster painting services while committees report rapid progress and the next meeting is set for December 16.

Girl Scouts Sell Christmas Seals in Local Outlets

Christmas seals will be sold by Girl Scouts under Mrs Frederick S Bartlett and Miss Frances Horton not in Bristol public schools this year. Seals also available at Miss Talhan T Wilson millinery gift shop in the YMCA Building on Hope Street to fight tuberculosis.

Quick Wit of Former Fire Chief Saves Cottage

Former Fire Chief John Grabert with Arthur Dunbar and Manuel Rego, all of this town, extinguished a grass fire near an unoccupied cottage owned by former Senator Ezra Dixon at Poppasquash. They battled flames with water relays and coats after noticing the blaze started by youths about 250 feet away and spread toward the shelter.
