Manuel Mattes aged 65 of 9 Magnolia Street received a surprise birthday party Sunday at his son Josephs home 1067 Hope Street. About 12 close relatives attended and a cash gift was presented after refreshments. He works for the town highway department. The Mattes family includes four sons and four daughters.
Mrs Frederick V. Martin travels to Daytona Beach Florida to join parents Mr and Mrs Samuel Hawkes marking their 50th wedding anniversary. The Hawkes family, long established in town lore as Madame Martial House, includes DAR involvement and crystal glass makers T G Hawkes and Company, now run by the family for seven generations.
Postmaster D W Coggeshall announced final Christmas mailing cutoffs by surface and air for all regions. The schedule aims to ease congestion amid winter storms with earlier deposits and greater use of air mail and special delivery.
