Twilight League rout as Cranston Worsted beats Whirlwind 10 to 0

Frankie Lewis’s Cranston Worsted Company, 1927 Twilight League champions, destroyed Anthony Bruno’s Whirlwind nine 10 to 0 in a five inning game. Foxy Marshall allowed three hits in five innings as Cranston built a big lead with two runs then six in the fourth and extended their winning streak over the Whirlwinds to four. Anniversary pageant marks Rhode Island battle commemoration

The 150th anniversary of the Battle of Rhode Island was observed with exercises at Butt’s Hill Portsmouth Tiverton and Newport. Daughters of the American Revolution and Sons of the American Revolution members attended along with the Colonial Company of Bristol Train of Artillery. A pageant in Newport featured citizens as Greene Sullivan Lafayette and a British colonel with a parade of historical floats and military units.

Holiday Post Office Schedule On Labor Day

Postmaster George W Warren announces a limited holiday schedule with no deliveries by city or rural carriers. One collection from street boxes at 7 am and mail dispatch at 8 45 am. Receipts at 6 45 and 7 45 am. Money order registry and postal savings offices closed all day. Windows close at 9 am. Lobby open 7 am to 9 am. Notices for morning carrier mail must be left by 30 pm Saturday Sept 1 1928.

The Prudence Island Field Day will be held tomorrow afternoon at Battery Point district with F A Whitaker of the Improvement Association in charge. Contests for all ages are planned and expected to attract a larger crowd than last year. An afternoon sale features food fancy work useful articles and drinks.

Bristol's First House to Host Historical Tablet Dedication

Plans emerge to place a bronze tablet on Bristol's earliest dwelling built by Deacon Nathaniel Bosworth around 1680. A Bristol residents committee and the Rhode Island Historical Society will organize dedicatory exercises likely featuring Governor Norman S Case. The home, notable for Colonial architecture, sits beside a garden famed for antique flowers and Mrs Perry’s stewardship.

Bristol to mark first dwelling with tablet ceremony

Residents plan a September event to honor the towns first house on Hope Street. Judge Edward L Leahy will deliver the principal address as the 248 year old dwelling, linked to Bristol’s 1775 bombardment and early religious services, is opened briefly to visitors. The town also prepares for its 250th anniversary in 1930 with a $1000 appropriation.

Public road and bridge projects draw Bristol attention

Town activity centers on the new Mite Hope bridge and a state road under construction along Metacom and Griswold avenues. Contractors Lawton and Co. extend road from Child Street to Narrows Road, widen corners at Metacom Griswold and Ferry, and lay a 12 inch water main as crews push to finish before cold weather.
