A local company seeks a decade long tax exemption for a Tupelo street building. The council, after voters approved a study, weighs the asset to the town and expected jobs, with objections to zoning and further hearings announced for 16 Nike housing units in Ferry.
Bristol County Water Company has filed an appeal with the Supreme Court challenging the Public Utilities Administrator's decision on rates. Attorney John P. Cooney noted the appeal does not yet include filed rates, which will be proven and take effect later. He advised the Town Council that he did not recommend the town appeal, believing the administrator's decision was fair, and offered to notify when new schedules are filed for town review.
The third annual awards night on the Common tomorrow will present fifteen awards to outstanding boys and girls from playgrounds. Six trophies and plaques will be given by donors. A father and son softball game at 6 pm opens the evening, followed by a 6 45 pm play day with events across four areas including pin baseball and basketball.
The Prudence license was suspended by the Town Council after a brief meeting last night. Police Chief Ferrara to conduct a full investigation and report, with suspension until the report is received. Manuel Cardoza outlined plans to rezone 8.5 acres north of Gooding avenue from residential to industrial. He envisions Bristol Auto Body Works, a renovated cottage for the Bristol Lions Club, a 60 by 60 foot swimming pool, and a wooded grove retained for picnics while ensuring no impact on nearby property values. A public hearing on the zoning petition is set for Thursday, September 13.
A touching farewell marked the Storione's departure from Bristol as the Italian Minesweeper began its trip to the Mediterranean. About 300 onlookers watched the ship sail amid choked words and smiles, closing a visit praised as unique in local history. The crew, Italian Navy officials, and Bristol steering committee members shared a bittersweet moment after an eight day stay delayed by Hurricane Betsy. Alderman C Paul Bruno presented a record player and sound system to Lt Commander Adriano Giacchetti as the ship prepared to sail into rough seas.
