Brown of New Orleans Crowned New Cotton King
William P. Brown of New Orleans, succeeding Daniel Sully as leader of the bulls on the New York Cotton Exchange, rose to fame on day one by sending cotton to record prices. A Mississippi native and self made hustler, Brown built a fortune from humble beginnings, amassing about $60,000 before a million dollar gain in the 1900 cotton corner. He is described as a tall, rugged man of about forty, calm in control with simple dress and imposing presence. He has ties to New Orleans Liverpool and Egypt interests and commands his brokers with cool certainty.
