Dorothy Holt Painting Featured in Christian Science Monitor

The Christian Science Monitor on August 14 published a large reproduction by Dorothy Holt Manuel of Bristol Rhode Island. The image, titled Court House Bristol Rhode Island, shows a southwest view from High street. The caption praises Holt as a Rhode Island artist whose realistic documentary style captures old town edifices with controlled brushwork and accurate drawing. The painting was loaned by the Stuart Art Gallery Boston.

Marshall Gets Republican Nomination for First District

Joseph J Marshall accepted the Republican nomination for Representative from the First District after Orlando Jrisbane and Peter Cavalier declined. He filed with Town Clerk John W Church along with Henry F Serbst for State Senate and Ralph T Church for the Second District. Democratic opponents include Daniel G Coggeshall and Henry Alfred with Mrs Gladys M Brightman. Marshall, a World War I veteran of the 77th Division and Lost Battalion, has led Public Welfare since 1942.

V J Block Dance Draws Two Thousand Attendees

An estimated crowd of two thousand gathered on Third Street for the V J Day Block Dance hosted by the Couples Victory Club of Bristol from 8 pm to midnight. Seaman second class Edward S Raposa, son of Mr and Mrs Frank N Sousa of 42 Franklin Street Bristol Rhode Island, was aboard the USS Saratoga before its sinking in the recent atomic bomb tests at Bikini Atoll. The carrier, first U S vessel launched as an aircraft carrier, faced numerous submarine and kamikaze attacks in the Pacific War.
