The Graves Registration Service and Its War Dead Work
The Graves Registration Service trained units at quartermaster centers before combat. They recovered and identified fallen soldiers, using tags, fingerprints, tooth charts, and personal effects. Unknown dead were traced to owners through rings, letters, and records, with long follow ups and civilian aid, continuing after cessation of hostilities. The service consolidated graves into semi permanent cemeteries, deployed across 450 sites at peak, and reduced to 380 within six months. The War Department now handles repatriation of remains under new law.
