Tree Warden Joseph C. Kinder warns Bristol faces its worst elm beetle infestation in 15 years with rain washing away sprayed arsenic and state spraying cut to a contract basis. He notes damage to elms off Hope street and urges more funds, estimating $5000 needed to protect about 5000 trees.
Dr. Hamilton Holt president of Rollins College argues success rests on instructors with inner influence. He promotes small classes, selective faculty, and teaching life over lectures, detailing limits of 20 per class and 500 total students at Rollins. The Bristol Rotary event also heard district leaders discuss the Maine Fall conclave.
Charl ie Swanson faces Edward Serves in the men singles final at 4 pm. Swanson and Ray Chace set to play Serves and Jack Marinsky in the men s doubles final. Jamestown Rhode Island tolls on the new Jamestown Bridge will be waived from 6 am to midnight on August 3 as the bridge is dedicated. Palin, the Grayhound fastest trotter in the world, was honored at a dinner hosted by August Hebert a Rhode Island horseman at the Lobster Pot. About 50 race officials trainers and horsemen attended with speeches by Seo Palin Dr J S Barber Dr Hugh M Marshall Walter Moore and other guests including Billy Ames Senator Ambrose McCoy Al Sanders and Fred Perkins.
The Union Church of Prudence Island marks its 14th anniversary on Sunday August 4 at 915 am with Rev Richard K Morton as main speaker soprano Florence Hult and organist Mrs Carl Lund from Worcester providing music. The Ladies Club hosts an August 13 event with tea white elephant sale hobby show and Chinese wares exhibition followed by a picnic and business meeting. Rev Herbert H Beck from Springfield begins August 11 and serves through September 1. The church stands on a double lot donated by Mrs Madison H Cram with the building praised for its resilience after a hurricane. The anniversary committee hopes to attract more than 50 of the original supporters.
