Relief debate trims town funding and a street resurfacing bill

A special town meeting recesses relief funding to $10,000 from $20,000 amid arguments led by Gen. L. H. Callan and Budget Committee chief Frank L. Doran. The town agrees to pay $2,500 now on a resurfacing bill originally $11,946.06, with remaining due via council plans.

Governor Donates Prize For Pistol Shoot At Clambake

Governor William H. Vanderbilt donates a trophy for the pistol shooting contest at the tenth Bristol County Police and Press Clambake. The event set for August 20 at Davis Pavilion Touisset features three prize matches including a Bristol County police team event and police shooters from Bristol Warren and Barrington. Ticket sales run August 1 to 13 with tickets distributed to committee members and early buyers already showing interest.

Rita Callan Performs In Smith College Concert

Rita Callan of 45 Sherry Avenue Bristol joined 81 other musicians in Smith College Summer School of Music concerts at Sage Hall Northampton Massachusetts. She sang alto in the Summer School Chorus performing Bach King of Heaven Come in Triumph under Victor Prahl. The program featured four orchestral works conducted by Gilbert Ross. The school enters its 12th season and offers MA degrees in musical literature or composition and non graduate courses in theory and pedagogy.

BTA Marches in Legion Parade at Norwich Conn

The Bristol Train of Artillery and Band joined the American Legion Convention parade in Norwich Connecticut on Saturday under a scorching sun. Lt. Col. Albert Hartley led the second division to hearty applause from locals and Bristol visitors. After the march the group returned to Bristol and enjoyed evening events hosted by Col. Edwin S. Godfrey.

Bristol County Tennis Championship Advances to Semi finals

Excellent progress across all classes at the Bristol County Tennis Championship at Excelsior Tennis Club. Defending champ Charlie Swanson and players Jack Marinsky Edward Serves and Donald Martin reach the semi finals as Bruce Daniels prepares for his semi final and Margo Lee wins two matches in the women's singles. Dr Hamilton Holt to Speak at Bristol Rotary Assembly

Dr Hamilton Holt president of Rollins College Florida will be principal speaker at the 198th Rotary District assembly in Bristol tomorrow. About 200 to 250 Rotarians from Rhode Island and Massachusetts are expected, with sessions at Colt Memorial High School and a banquet at the New Bristol Casino.

Thirteen Drum Corps Compete Despite Exceeding Heat

In 98 degree heat a parade through the town and a field contest at Guiteras School drew thirteen drum and bugle corps. George Moore Girls Drum and Bugle Corps of Westerly won top honors with 2029 points and took best playing and baton awards. Rockdale Drum and Bugle Corps of Northbridge won seniors while Warren Safety Patrol claimed junior and senior standings. About 800 spectators witnessed the events, with Bristol hosts barred from competition but demonstrating twirling and baton skills.
