Franchot Tone’s divorce from Barbara Payton is recalled via a humorous 10 000 Wives letter in The Christian Century. The missive mocks domestic etiquette and warns wives to curb embarrassing remarks, then lists typographical errors from newspapers as light relief in Simeon Stylites style.
Gov Dennis J Roberts joins in as Rhode Island senator Old Dan Coggeshall turns 90 amid a large clambake at Colt Farm. Over 300 attend for Pomham Club chowder and lobster while banter about future politics mixes with tributes from state leaders including Lt Gov John S McKiernan and Judge Albert K Baker. The event features a large caricature of Dan’s life in politics and service.
About 250 children watched a water safety demonstration yesterday by Carl V. Slader arranged by swimming instructor Vincent Securo. Slader showed life saving methods with and without apparatus and demonstrated swimming strokes. A parade of fold bathing costumes amused the crowd. Securo announced new beach classes starting Monday with beginners 10 to 11 and intermediates 11 to 12 noon. Entries for Hog Island swim due August 23 with applicants 15 years old or older urged to apply.
John D. Moore announces Bristol County Narragansett Electric plans a town wide switch from manufactured to natural gas. About 600 adjusters will inspect and repair gas appliances, preparing burners to receive natural gas which is hotter and requires adjusted air and gas openings for safe operation.
Filing closes for fall elections as 56 Democrats and 45 Republicans seek town committee posts. Reps Henry Alfred and Gladys Brightman announce bids along with GOP rivals Manuel Cardoza and Norman Vermette for district seats. Domenic Perroni also files for state senate. Coggeshall replies to Perroni’s bid.
United Rubber Workers Local 339 voted 742 to 23 authorizing a strike to back wage and benefit demands at U S Rubber Company plants nationwide. Bristol votes caused temporary stoppages. two cent wage offer discussed as talks resume in New York. Bristol All-Stars eye district play after back to back wins over Barrington and Warren, aiming for Providence next week.
Walter W. Swanson of Craniston was elected pastor of the First Baptist Church at a special Wednesday night meeting. A lay preacher licensed by the People’s Baptist Church of Cranston, Swanson is married to Katherine Farrar and has four children. He works as sales manager for James C. Goff Company in Providence and attended East Greenwich Academy and Bryant College while pursuing theological studies. Dorothy Mott was elected Sunday School superintendent and Mrs. Wilcox Luther secretary treasurer. Mott succeeds Mrs. Robert Powell who resigned.
The Kearney Post Legion team faces Warren Post tonight at 6 after Tuesday's T seven tie. A win would grant undisputed second place, potentially moving Kearney ahead of Kennedy-Collins Post of Pawtucket in the standings.
