Hearing Recessed To May 5 In Bristol County Water Case

After two days of public hearing before state public utility administrator George F. Michael the Bristol County Water Company case for a 60 percent rate rise was recessed to May 5. Judge John P. Cooney Jr. attended for Bristol County towns funding the challenge. The local company cites rising taxes and costs. if approved bills would jump sharply and annual revenue rise by about $271,000. The process includes testimony from Coffin & Richardson and rebuttal, with further evidence on May 5.

Follies Of 59 Getting Ready for Performance

In less than a week the cast of the Follies of 59 will entertain the first of three audiences. Under director William MacDonald the cast rehearses in the Harriet Bradford Janes residence with singing dancing and acting. Co chairmen Mrs Rodman Chase and Mrs Joseph Cormica oversee details keeping committees on track since January. Chase Mary Alice charter member and former secretary led the project and last year organized talent efforts. Correia Clare known as Clare to friends chaired projects and the ways and means committee the club’s first year.

Mancini Advocates State Help for Freeways in Bristol

Philip Mancini state traffic engineer spoke at the Bristol Chamber of Commerce meeting at Castle Restaurant. He argued freeways relieve city streets, noting highways can handle 2000 vehicles per hour per lane, but intersections and business districts reduce flow. the state would cooperate to solve traffic and freeways would not harm business areas as through-traffic clears the routes. East Shore Freeway Could Be Started In 5 Years

Angelo A Marcello state director of public works told Warren Bristol Chamber of Commerce representatives that the East Shore expressway could begin within five to ten years if bonding authority is granted by the General Assembly and taxpayers. The meeting in Marcello’s office included Nath an Eisenstadt Philip Mancini Raymond De Leo Philip Bodell Filis P Hawkes John Vallenti and Rep John Bocchino. The plan places the route about 500 feet west of Metacom Avenue near the town line, continuing to Ferry Road and the Mt Hope Bridge, based on Wilbur Smith and Associates' prior designs.

Riccio heading to Spain for six months of construction work

Joseph G A Riccio of 932 Hope Street leaves next Monday from Boston for Madrid Spain as a Naval Reserve lieutenant commander to assist in lump sum construction contracts in Spain. He will oversee airport and seaport facility work for logistic support of airfields, with a six month stay at the Plaza Hotel Madrid. He plans for his family to join after school ends and will stop at Santa Maria Azores to consult with Naval personnel.

First Time Woman Is Chairman Miss Connors Elected Bristol School Committee

Miss Margaret M Connors was elected chairman of the Bristol School Committee last night by a 4 to 1 vote with Henry Alfred voting no. Edward J Fitzgerald presided as committee clerk and several members spoke on whether she should resign as vice chairman while a candidate for chairman. The meeting led to multiple nominations, with Joseph Sansone briefly withdrawing and the board ultimately moving toward a unanimous vote, though Henry Alfred recorded a no vote.

Civil Defense Drill Set For Rhode Island April 17

Rhode Island joins a national civil defense drill on April 17 with sirens at 11 30 am and a Conelrad test. The take cover signal at 1 30 pm asks the public to seek shelter for 10 minutes. No action is required during the alert and all clear timing will be communicated via Conelrad. Demonstrations and exhibits run April 17 and 18 with the state control center staffed and a statewide emergency radio test on April 18.
