The Town Council tabled final plans for Town Hall renovation and the telephone building purchase until Monday night. The second in a six part series of Narragansett Bay pollution tests will occur soon. Carleton A. Maine senior sanitary engineer said the initial test was not encouraging but winter results often worsen readings. Tests are conducted aboard state fish and game boats. The Bay holds an estimated annual quahog crop of 250000 dollars. Major pollution sources come from Taunton and Fall River Massachusetts with Fall River reducing raw sewage output in recent years.
Thirty Y M C A sports enthusiasts travel from Bristol to Springfield College for the Massachusetts and Rhode Island Sports Festival where all state championships are decided. Hector Massa leads the group. Allen and Marshall assist at the host college. Over 2,000 entries, 200 teams, 800 competitors expected. 49 associations and 36 championships contested. The Y junior varsity basketball team will represent Bristol with 14 win season and includes Ouellette, Freitas, Borges, DaPonte, Nastri, Natale, Mascena, Moriero, Conti, Palma, and Marshall. Weight lifting and achievement contests feature several entrants including Estrella, Proto, Vaccaro, Saviano, and Silvia. others listed for class entries.
Dr Samuel D Clark a Bristol town figure for nearly two decades announced his acceptance of a medical staff post at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge Mass He will end his Bristol practice in June or July and begin duties Sept 4 He will oversee medical care for about 12000 students faculty and staff He will be one of four MIT physicians and work under Dr James Faulkner He plans to head the college infirmary and divide time between study and research at Boston centers He leaves after 18 years interrupted by three years in the U S Army Medical Corps He is active in local organizations including the Bristol County Medical Association where he is a former president and is active in civic groups He is father of five whose eldest will enter Harvard next fall
The Fourth of July Committee will open carnival bids at its 8 p.m. meeting at the YMCA. Only one bid arrived by the Saturday deadline. The committee may also request a subsidy of 2000 to 2500 for the celebration at the April 23 town meeting. A State Education band is assigned to perform during the event.
State Sen Anthony DaPonte defended Bristol’s sewer aid request while challenging State Director Jo seph Vallone’s claim that West Warwick bridge funding was an emergency move. DaPonte urged open discussion to inform public opinion amid the dispute over a $300000 bridge expenditure.
The harbor development commission will meet with several sport fishermen Thursday night to discuss facility improvements across town. Agenda items include rights of way parking areas launching facilities for small boats and fishing piers.
The King Philip Little League unveils plans for an Open House at the YMCA on April 20 with baseball movies and a guest list of Little Leaguers farm leaguers and parents. Tryouts are set for April 21 28 and 30 at Little League Field followed by a player auction that night. Bristol County Elks plan the sixth annual Elks National Youth Day on May 1 honoring Junior Citizens. Exalted Ruler Wallace A. Sessick announced a community program highlighting youth achievements in school, community affairs, and activities. Youth Committee led by Joseph Brelsford will organize events.
The zoning board of review will hold a public hearing Friday night on a rezoning request for farm land on Metac Avenue to allow an integrated shopping center. Owner Agnes Mahoney and broker Nicholas Caldarone seek the change. a referral to taxpayers could come at the April 23 meeting. Wardwell Lumber Co. also seeks to rezone land south of Tupelo Street to industrial use.
The Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra sextet will headline a concert under the Women’s Club on April 9 at 8 15 p m in Colt auditorium. A coffee hour and reception follow at the Harriet Bradford Inn. Solos include Corinne Curry and Conti with Burgess on flute. The program features Mozart and pieces by Wiener, Raft, Boulanger, Mendelssohn, Foster and others. Concert chairman is Mrs Frank Martin.
