Dancing at Johannesburg mines marks African tribal life fading
John Hughes reports from Johannesburg on miners’ weekends spent watching tribal dances in large arenas near mine towers. Dancers perform barefoot amid dust and ostrich plumes while modern touches appear, such as neckties and tennis rackets, as cities lure natives from rural life. The piece notes the spectacle, the decline of indigenous spontaneity, and the long bus queues home after shifts.
