Market entries show oats wheat butter and eggs prices for Gorn and surrounding towns with several notices. Updates include new bicycle club members list a staff resignation at the high school and a move to the University of Chicago. A wind storm caused damage and naval training plans for two locals are noted.
Residents report several dry days marking an unusual June stretch in 14947. Tuesday brought the first real rain of the month, ending the dry spell and dampening streets and gardens.
Six persons were killed and 903 injured by fireworks last Fourth of July, a toll higher than desirable. The 1946 injuries show a drop from 1941 wartime levels, but eye injuries remain a concern. Officials urge stricter state laws and better enforcement to cut unnecessary harm.
The note marks July 4 as the flag's birthday in its current form, recounting how 13 stars and stripes began and how Congress in 1819 set 13 stripes with as many stars as states. It notes potential changes if new states join.
Mrs Nellie Crahan Garry died Friday at her home near Pleasat Iowa after a long illness. Funeral services were held Monday in St Josephs church with burial in Calvary cemetery. A complete biography of this former resident will be published next week.
A graveside service was held at Elmwood Cemetery for the infant son of John J. and Lorene Hartley Maher of Oak Gill. Rev Donald Neisenhe conducted the ceremony Sunday morning at 9 00. Grandparents are Mr and Mrs Done W Maher and Mr and Mrs Bee Bastley of Oak Gul, with the maternal grandmother Mrs Wa Wolf living in Eamhaven.
Herbert J Blanchard died in June 1987 in St Louis Missouri where he had lived for years. He worked for Missouri Kansas Texas, Missouri Pacific, and Parker Russell Mining Co after studying architecture at the University of Illinois. Burial was in Hannibal Missouri. He was survived by his daughter Isa Blanchard.
Dr Fremont Allister Cummins, a former resident, died Wednesday at age 53. He lived in the Los Angeles area 18 years and served as a Navy lieutenant in World War I. He leaves his wife and daughter Garla, his father Dr J C F Cummins of Los Angeles, and two sisters Mrs Eana Post and Mrs Maurine Crail. Funeral services were held June 24 at the Emr B Meyer Funeral Home on Van Nuys Boulevard.
Captain Richard D Zern USK former assistant commandant of the worldwide Armed Forces Radio Service base departs Hollywood for Newport Rhode Island to join the Navy War College. He is replaced by Captain W M Downes USK, formerly president of the General Sports Martial Board in San Diego. Both are decorated WW2 Pacific veterans. Zern is the son of Mr and Mrs Joe Zern who expect a visit en route to his new post.
John Smith and his son visited his mother Mrs Susie Smith while John Hasselbscher and family moved to Brimfield Beamer tenant house. Several families and friends traveled to Anamosa Iowa and Peoria for visits and an air show at Peoria airport.
Mr and Mrs Wayne H Chase invite relatives and friends to an open house from 3 to 6 PM DST on Sunday June 29 to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary at their home near Laura. Mrs W P Forster has returned from the Methodist hospital and thanks neighbors and friends for cards and flowers.
A baby named Allen Ray arrived on March 30, 1947 to Mr and Mrs Scott of Onewin. The infant and mother were reported healthy and planned to stay at home after the birth.
Tweatores will remain open all day Thursday July 3 and close all day Friday July 4, adjusting hours around the holiday.
Mr and Mrs Gilbert Heston and two daughters Charlotte and Sharon of Scot Bluff Nebraska were Sunday guests with Fred Dawson and family.
Last Wednesday families of Robert Bammerlet Clarence Bieder beck Merle McKown W E Mulvaney and Fred Dawson spent a pleasant evening with the Forrest Taylor family.
Mr and Mrs E. A. Kennedy of Gaierburg were Sunday guests of Mr and Mrs Walter Ratfield. Afternoon callers were Mr and Mrs Fred Waldlicker of Gasern and Mrs Horace Moon.
French Grove Loren Oakes of Los Angeles visited Galesburg where Mrs L Oakes showed greater improvement in her health. Eldert and Mrs Robert Fedge with granddaughter Robertamielz visit with Mrs Peter Custer and family. Mabel Mott hopes for good recovery after a broken foot. she will be hospitalized briefly. Improvement Society meets at McClellan Clark residence with program by Miss Barbara Smith and committee Mott Custer and Martzlof. New Methodist pastor Rev Walter S Wight arriving from Allerton. formerly district superintendent in the Methodist Church South before the merger.
Brimfield 4H Club met with 18 members including Mary Leo Courtright and Earlene Coins at Radley school. Virgil Traver spoke on sheep judging and Earlene Collins demonstrated calf blanket making. Next meeting July 9 with Ruth and Eileen Goffman.
The Veory Belpera 4 AH club met Thursday June 12 at the high school. President Berta Slocum opened the session with talks by Nancy person Muk Drinks and Don Howe on Attractive Sunwich es. Mary Louise Nauman demonstrated Neck and Front Finishes. Next gathering set for June 26 at 2 pm DST. Beverly Slocam reported.
Donna Jean Kornmeyer and E wood Poling wed in a Methodist church ceremony on June 22 at 2 PM in Farmington. The service featured white peonies and candelabra, with Rosalyn Kornmeyer as maid of honor and Carl Kornmeyer as ring bearer. After a reception in the church basement the couple planned a Chicago honeymoon and home in Downs Illinois as Poling studies for the ministry at Illinois Wesleyan University.
The former Ross Porte electrical shop site once known as the Bort barber shop and Brimfield bakery is being divided into three large and two small rooms. Joseph M Ketay M D plans to open the Brimfield Medical Clinic after relocating from Peoria where he has practiced for years. The clinic will be open for inspection and use.
About 600 people visited the new Ser vice Store on its opening day Saturday to inspect the building and the new electrical equipment on the floor. Door prizes including a mix master table lamp radio and a fence charger were awarded in the evening.
The Legion Auxiliary notes a meeting set for June 2 at 4330 PM DST with installation of officers. Plans will be made for a trip to Peoria State Hospital on Tuesday afternoon in July with committee members Harriett B Ber Nice Sehelkopf Rita Resuhart Mary Sollenberger.
E T Anderson of Detroit is spending a few days with the Walter Tocker family, enjoying a brief visit and hospitality.
Mr Glen Shane spent a few hours here Wednesday and has recently returned to his home in Toulon after receiving treatment at the Mayo Clinic.
