Harvey Young Graduates With Honor in Galesburg

Harvey Young oldest son of Rev and Mrs W Garvey Young of Galesburg finished high school with a superior scholastic record. He was one of three in a class of 293 to earn straight A’s and was chosen class orator for the commencement. He also excelled on the debating team, receiving a Hamilton watch from a fund to promote debating interest.

Concert Season Opens With Brimfield Band in Park

The first band concert of the season drew a fine crowd in the park on Saturday with no prior announcement. A concert is planned each Saturday and an extra Wednesday night concert monthly, sponsored by Brimfield merchants and local citizens to keep a band in the community. Come to Brimfield and enjoy music, friends, and shopping.

Small Town Stores Plan Thursday Noon Closings

Local merchants agree to noon Thursday closures during July and August to follow town custom. The Parkside and Overen cafes will alternate closing to keep one restaurant open for emergencies. Community events cover graduations, concerts, and a Chicago World Fair trip for Martial high school.

French Grove and surrounding towns report a string of visits from Elmwood Peoria Brimfield and Farmington. The Improvement and Missionary Society prepares a church festival with proceeds for local repairs and a post event cleanup and pot luck meal. Residents share weekend calls from Betty Reed and friends to nearby families and a Shorthorn cattle sale entry in Galesburg.

Laura Items and Commencement Notes From Peoria County

Sunday visitors included Laura Miller and Pam with Mr and Mrs Wm Miller at Ray Doug hese. Laura won both kitten ball games on June 11 against Monica in Elmore. Commencement exercises of Peoria county schools were held June 10 with many local residents in attendance. Shoppers and visitors, including the Baltwins, Ike Sleeth, Ola Coe, Newton Coe, and others, were noted from Mt. Pleasant and nearby towns.

French Grove Festival Tonight at Church

The 48th annual strawberry ice cream and cake festival will be held at the French Grove Church on Thursday evening, June 15. Proceeds go to church repairs. Prices 25c and 10c. Everyone invited for a social evening with music and performances by local artists.

Oak Hill Happenings With Local Visits and Minor Accident

John Harding of Wyoming spent several days with his son Oscar and family. Belle Clayton and daughter Marie of Elmwood visited with Mr and Mrs Leri Nixon. Clyde Macey was knocked down by a bull while driving milch cows, breaking a collar bone, with Harlan Snyder nearby aiding. Macey remains nervous and bruised. Walter Kratzer and family visited Beardstown with Elias Kratzer. Dinner guests at Thomas McCoy’s were Boy Bape of Monica Shelby McCoy and family. Brock Imler visited Charley near Farmington. Ray and wife entertained Decatur and others from East Peoria for a vacation gathering. His father carries the mail.

John Clark spent Saturday with his brother J R Clark. George and Mrs Marthus and son Giles joined the Legion picnic in Nelson woods on Sunday. C N Clark with son Lee and Fred Mann with daughter from Elmwood visited the Morans. Charles Martziuf traveled to southern Kansas to tour a dairy farm. The Driskell family’s little daughter suffered heat illness. Mrs Gubb and grandma Marctziuf visited Peoria Sunday. Bernard Moore of Peoria visited his sister Mrs Linsay Sunday. Milo Driskell Jake Martzlof and Frank Wickwire spent Sunday evening with J R Clark. John Ingersoll with wife and Mr and Mrs Twiles of Peoria were in Southport Tuesday. John Kramer and brother spent Sunday in Peoria.

Johnson Herriott Johnson unite in quiet Galesburg wedding

On Saturday morning June 10 at ten oclock Helen L Herriott and Eugene L Johnson wed at the bride’s mother’s home in Galesburg. Rev W H Young officiated before immediate family. The bride wore yellow and will study at Columbia after a visit to Missouri. Johnson teaches history at Galesburg High School.

S. H. Woodson Dies in Railroad Accident Near Peoria

Samuel H. Woodson, switch foreman for the C B and Q railway, was killed when a loose 1170 pound rail toppled him from a freight engine crossing the Peoria East Peoria bridge. Fellow switchman Robert L. Lora was injured and hospitalized. An inquiry will probe a possible intentional placement of the rail. Survived by wife Madeline Fussner and daughter Shirley. funeral at Wilton Mortuary.

Miss Katharine McDonnell Buried Here

Miss Katharine McDonnell died in Peoria after a several week illness. Born on a Brimfield farm seventy six years ago, she lived much of her life in the area. She moved to Peoria with sister Etta years ago and remained there until Etta’s death in 1930. Since then she resided at St Josephs home and died there. Funeral services were held at the home Chapel and burial followed in Calvary Cemetery Brimfield. Survived by a half brother James Brennan, two nieces and four nephews.

Mrs. R. B. Roberts accompanied her daughter Mrs. Walter Rogers to Chicago on Sunday. Mrs. Rogers, visiting at Roberts' home, will proceed from Chicago to her Rochester New York home.

Clifford Cady drove a bus load of World's Fair visitors to Chicago early Tuesday. Miss Edna Johnson of the University of Colorado arrived for a short visit with her father H. R. Johnson before continuing to Massachusetts for summer study. Mr. and Mrs. Allen Moore of Chicago came down from Chicago Friday, with Mrs. Moore staying with her mother Mrs. Walker Marshall while her husband attended a Corn Products meeting in Pekin. Mrs. Moore is known locally as Elsie Cobb.

Big Picnic Planned by Brimfield Post American Legion

The Brimfield Post of the American Legion invites all veterans and their families to a June 25 picnic on Spoon River. Attendees can enjoy swimming, fishing, games, and contests, with a noon meal. A speaker will address veterans care changes for disabled veterans and dependents. Venue to be announced next week.

4 H Club Meeting and Local Sporting Events

The 4 H club will meet at the high school commercial building at 8:00 Friday June 16. A double header between Monica and Brimfield kitten ball teams is set for Sunday June 18 at Christiana ball diamond with first game at 1:30. A basket picnic and dinner follow at Oak Circle Keighan school. All former pupils teachers and families in the district are invited.
