Laura and Mr and Mrs Thos Riggen visited relatives in Nebraska and South Dakota. Dave Wveoff spent several days last week with his son Hugh near Havanna. Mr and Mrs Don Webater drove to Devils Lake Wisconsin for a few days of fishing. Mrs Paul Noland and daughters Anna Mae and Claree visit Homewell Missouri. Mr and Mrs Earl Fauth returned from a trip through New York and eastern states. Mrs C McKinney of Brimfield and Mrs Kenneth McKinney and children visited Chas Thomas home. Wilbur Symmonds of Proria called on Edward Kalb. Mary Miller accompanied home. Leland Whittaker and family and Mrs Lijord Whittaker visited Ed Jessen in Monmouth. Mrs Greta Strickland returned from Whither Calf where she visited Everett Barrett and family.

Strike Delays Telephone Reconstruction Project

Several crews of line and cable men are on strike delaying the reconstruction of the local telephone line. The vacant switchboard area shows partial progress while Walter Muller and Pete Lottman oversee a face lifting of the exterior and interior public areas.

Gains For Labor Amid TaftHartley Aftermath

The TaftHartley Act faced opposition from SIOPAC and labor allies who vowed to defeat supporters. Yet 147 Act backers faced re election, with 1317 winning and only one major northern district losing. Miners gain a liberal pension tied to a high wage, and the short workday remains, while other industries report similar advances. Workers view the law as not weakening labor and see benefits accruing to labor’s rank and file.

French Grove George Reed and daughter Miss Edith Reed of Keokuk visited A. K. Moore and attended memorial services for Mr John Whitaker on Monday. The Clark and Hawley families traveled to Champaign Urbana, while W. E. Carter and Mary Lou joined others at the State Fair where William’s FFA beer project placed third.

Brimfield Girls Shine at Chicago Music Festival

Brimfield sent several performers to the Midwest Music Festival in Chicago. Mary Ann Mulvaney and Karen Lou Mulvaney played marimba with the Peoria Accordion Band, Mary Lou Mulvaney entered the solo marimba contest, and the group joined a large marimba orchestra at Stadium and a 40 piece marimba ensemble at Railroad Park. Virginia Stickles and Sylvia Hines also performed with the ensembles and Hammerettes. Families accompanied the daughters to the city and the large marimba group was entertained at a Lagoon Restaurant dinner hosted by Prot Musser of Northwestern University.
