Whitten Builds Farm Residence and August Rail News

In The Files for August 3 1888 Whitten is building a residence on his farm northwest of town. About 300 men are working on the railroad and a Santa Fe town exists. County fair plans include signs for the Wrench Grove Fair Association and a Gen Gamaphone entertainment at Congregational Church Friday night August 9 with Rev Aten and Fred Paul speaking.

Many Old Timers Expected For Picnic In Brimfield

Brimfield prepares for a three day Old Settler’s Picnic sponsored by the American Legion with home talent acts. Elmwood band performs at 7 30 PM and Friday features Whitey the Magician and Jackson Binteruiners from Galva. Kewanee V F Accordion Band performs on Saturday. The Burkart Carnival offers rides and concessions with free rides Thursday morning and Legion and church refreshment stands serving fried chicken plates and hot dogs.

Everett Howe Now In Osaka Japan

Pvt Everett Howe serves with the Osaka Military Government Team in Osaka as a truck driver. He joined the service in 1944 and trained at Camp Lee Virginia. He sailed to Japan in December 1946 and was assigned to the 217th Infantry Regiment, 26th Division, in Osaka with postings in Otsu Honshu. His father, Lloyd Howe, lives in Brimfield.

Mr and Mrs Donald Muller left Friday for a Minnesota fishing trip. Mrs Don Webster and children attended the Leigh reunion at Glen Oak Park. Mr and Mrs Bob Duniscot and Mrs Bam Dunivant of Peoria called on friends. Wallace Philips and children visit relatives in Kentucky. John Cole and children take a trip through the southern states. Waura Royal Neighbors met at Mrs Uydin Purcell’s home. Mrs Clarence Biederbeck returned from a two week visit with her sister in Poughkeepsie New York. Walter Spellman and two sons from Galesburg visited the Barnes family. Mrs Barry Schuyler and children return to View Minn after visiting Mille relatives. Earl Tucker and two children of Withamefield and Harry Tucker of Evanston called on Wiley Reed Saturday. Della Beach of Peoria and James Xzmper left for Detroit Michigan to visit Myrtle Rowe and Paul Kempter.

Local Visit Notes From Knox County Fair Week

Mrs Dick Armstrong cared for her hospitalized sister at 10 Galesburg last week. Visitors to Clyde Carte home included Mrs Holland Learned and Rosita, Mr and Mrs Walfred Lyons and family. Cattle and hog shows featured Kellogg with Duroc Jersey pigs and William Carter with Shorthorn cattle.

John C Whittaker Funeral Services Held in Laura

Funeral services for John C. Whittaker were held at Laura Methodist Church with Rev. Charles Warper reading the prayer and scripture and Rev. A H Dickerson delivering the sermon. Rudolph Savage, with Mildred Pacey, sang two numbers. Casketbearers included Ed Kalb Dan Kuntz Willis Tolley Martie Koglund Rudy Pople and G R Games. Burial followed in Princeville cemetery. Whittaker was fatally injured when his car was struck by a truck near Laura. He died in Kewanee hospital after regaining consciousness. Born May 25 1874 near Bromfield he farmed near Laura. He married Myrtie O Hardy July 9 1903 and had one son John Mardy Whittaker of Laura. He is survived by his wife a son two brothers and a number of nieces and nephews.

Registration for grades seven to twelve at the Brimfeid Unit District No 309 high school is set for August 16 and 17 from 9:09 to 3:00. First graders register on August 23 to tour facilities and meet teachers. Grades two through six use regular county books. no registration. Books available at Peoria bookstores with a list of titles. Health examinations required for grades one five and nine before August 30. family physicians typically have the blanks.

Philadelphia Contributionship Building and Franklin’s Fire Insurance

The Philadelphia Contributionship on 4th Street, built in 1836, stands as Franklin’s legacy in fire insurance. Founded in 1752 by Franklin and others, it is the nation’s oldest fire insurance company. A 1752 notice in the Pennsylvania Gazette invited subscriptions at the city courthouse, with twelve directors and a treasurer to be elected on April 13. Franklin’s policies were Nos. 19 and 20.
