U S District Judge Ben Moore voided the court martial conviction of former WAC Captain Kathleen Nash Durant for theft of the Hesse crown jewels. The ruling says the army court lacked jurisdiction since she was not on active duty at arrest. The 206 page opinion upholds that her terminal leave orders were not revoked and she was formally separated on May 30, 1946.
The Hartford Courant reports that the 7500 a year deputy state controller post held by Frank L. Barlow, who resigned last May amid a lease controversy, has been abolished and no longer appears on state employment lists. The post was eliminated under Governor McConaughy’s directive to remove vacant or soon to be vacant positions. Barlow remains on the reemployment list but cannot be reinstated until a specific recreation is approved by the State Personnel Board.

San Francisco witnesses report Attorney General Howser connected the Bugsy Siegel murder to a California bookmaking war. He named two “very good suspects” whose whereabouts were known to the Department of Justice. Siegel, a Southern California underworld figure, was killed June 20 in Beverly Hills at Virginia Pall’s home.
Mrs Anna Pavluchik 43 of 151 College Street Stratford was seriously injured when struck by an auto while crossing Farnfield Avenue near Main Street shortly after 6 p.m. yesterday. Companion Gloria Gaztrone 36 of 1490 Pembroke Street was injured as Pavluchik was hurled into the air.
Daniel Carpio, a Peruvian distance swimmer, reached the English coast one mile west of Dover early today to become the first to swim the channel since Sally Bauer in 1939. He finished in 4 hours 8 minutes after a start at Cap Gris Nez, France, with waves and currents pushing the distance to about 42 miles.
The Atomic Energy Commission said the first overseas shipment of American radioisotopes will be flown to Australia for an urgent polycythemia vera case. Thirty two milligrams of phosphorous radioisotope will depart Oak Ridge Tennessee, fly via Delta to Chicago and United to San Francisco, then by rail to Australia, due to a 14.3 day half life.
