Bridgeport area forecast shows showers today clearing to fair weather Sunday. Temperatures near 74 yesterday with highs around 40s tonight. Precipitation reported at 0.34 inches, tides high tomorrow morning near 427 am and 458 pm, almanac notes mark the forty eighth day of the year.
The Community Chest and Council of Bridgeport Stratford and surrounding area named a new officers slate headed by W Stewart Clark retired General Electric executive to serve as the first president under the reorganization. New officers include Bernard H. Trager Kathrine N. Fitzpatrick Rufus P. Cushman William I. Joashar Dennis Tobin and Fiwood Street reelected as executive director. Andrew R. Smith and others named to fill vacancies after UC Wadsworth Ivex resignation.
At the meeting the Chest President was elected for a three year period. Additional business included adoption of bylaws to supplement the new constitution and guidance for the Budget committee and general administration. Continued on Page Eight.
Housing committee proposes permanent expandable unit type dwellings to ease city housing shortage. City Attorney Donnelly to draft zoning amendment. Board of Appeals to hear cases for partial construction and future completion. Details to be continued on page eight.
Hartford Sept 5 Deputy Secretary of State John E Russell urged towns under general zoning statutes to hold special town meetings and adopt the new zoning act to retain current programs. He noted state zoning statutes expire Oct 1 and towns must elect five members to zoning boards of appeals under the new law.

Fairfield Board of Education met at Ludlowe High School to apply to the State Public School Commission for aid to fund a Grasmere School addition. Twenty persons attended the 15 minute session. board member Ralph D. Mount said up to $50,000 in state funds may be available for the $450,000 Grasmere extension, financed by a town bond issue. Judge Ned E B Ostmark chaired the meeting.
A Worcester man visiting Bridgeport reunited with a former shipmate after a traffic stop led to a face to face meeting at police headquarters. Donald Walker and his wife learned the man paying a $6 fine, Charles Gianini of 502 Warren Street, was their long lost comrade.
Stamford report says the Connecticut Federation of Labor voted to continue endorsing political candidates at its state convention. A Norwalk union proposal to scrap the political action committee was defeated after a 45 minute floor fight. The body reelected its leaders and approved a plan to endorse candidates in upcoming elections who pledge support to organized labor. It also aims to repeal the Taft Hartley act and defeat Connecticut members who voted for it while pushing a broad political action campaign.
Dr Samual Hoberman a 66 year old retired physician was reported missing from his daughter's home at Grinnell street and Naugatuck avenue Milford Sept 5. He was found shortly before 5 pm in a dazed exhausted condition by police and fire departments in a wooded area near a creek after a search that began at 10:20 am. He was returned to his home after being scratched by briars and aided by Lt Grady Wilson Fireman Millard Osgood and Patrolman Allen Anderson.
In Newtown on September 4 the Republican Town committee won two major caucus contests. William E. Leman, backed by the Newtown Republican club, lost to Wi Ham Holcombhe for first selectman, 298 to 177. George H. Tower, endorsed by the Town committee, defeated Robert D. Fairchild for assessor, 233 to 220. Frank H. Strasburger nominated for unexpired assessor term. Other nominations were by acclamation.
At the national encampment in Cleveland the Veterans of Foreign Wars adopted a resolution accusing Henry A. Wallace of criticizing U S foreign policy before Europeans. It urged Congress to authorize actions against sponsors of such speeches in foreign countries, including possible dissolution and asset forfeiture of the sponsoring organizations.
Milford voters hear a Republican caucus endorse a full slate for the October town election. Nominees include Selectmen Ralph Broderick and Clarence Cabbie, Town Clerk George F Weed, Town Treasurer Jesse Rose, Tax Collector William Bissell, Assessors Meitwin Williams and John Wakenigg, and Constables Frank Welch Allene Handford Gordon Kelly and Robert Kingsbury. Judge Warren A Field presided as chairman. The slate was presented by Omar W Platt.
Bridgeport driver Bill Holland sustained a deep gash over his left eye after crashing into the battle boards on the Rutland half mile dirt track. He was treated at Rutland hospital and released. The race ended with Ted Horne declared winner after Holland crashed during the 18 1/2 lap.
Senator Vandenberg declared Congress will not grant a blank check for Europe. He warned action on any emergency abroad would require presidential initiative and adequate information and ruled out a planned special session unless the White House identifies a need.
Norwalk Democratic City convention adopted a resolution urging Governor McConaughy to call an immediate special session to repeal the sales tax. The gathering nominated Robert F Howard for mayor. Paul R Connery authored the repeal resolution on behalf of the city committee. Election set for October 6 amid city town consolidation context.
President Truman told the Brazilian Congress that the United States will not forget allies in need and urged continued cooperation with Brazil. He described a strong, concerted Western Hemisphere force for mankind and pledged U.N. support, noting Brazil’s wartime aid and air bases. The speech framed Brazil and the United States as lifelong friends with shared ideals and the pursuit of a just world.
