Stratford board denies rezoning and civic center project amid debate over town ability to purchase involved property. Proponents and opponents clash at public hearing, with planning board members expressing concerns on purchase and future development.
The Bridgeport region remains warm with cloudy skies and a chance of precipitation later today. Forecasts note the likelihood of light rain this afternoon into early evening with temperatures easing by tomorrow.
Westport officials approve a 100000 plan by the Beach commission to enlarge Cedar Point Yacht basin to 200 moorings, widen the channel, resand beaches, and rebuild two breakwaters. The proposal, funded by a 20 year bond at under 2 percent, also covers sand placement and expanded mooring revenue.
A Monroeville girl, Patricia Skevars, age under one, suffered second and third degree burns to the chest and arms after her cotton dress caught fire while playing behind Building 4. Richard Hall and Mere Fottie Montor pulled the blaze from her chest, saving her from fatal burns. Patrolmen reported finding matches and burned paper behind the bush where she played, and she was taken to Bridgeport Hospital in serious but improving condition.
In Athens on Thursday Sept 4 1950 a threatened strike by 72 000 Greek civil servants was averted after the government granted 25 to 50 per cent wage increases in a late concession. The plan to dismiss 15 000 civil servants within six months stemmed from American aid mission recommendations. The crisis prompted mobilization threats and coalition negotiations as Tsaldaris sought to broaden his government amid U S concerns for a broadly based cabinet.
A group of 30 B-29 Superfortress bombers from Westover Field Massachusetts began a mass flight toward Europe to show the German air forces their strength. Bridgeport judges named George K. Pratt and J. M. Lesko to assess the mental condition of William Fair, 22, of Brooklyn, held in county jail for the rifle slaying of his former fiancée Shirley Simmons, 17, of Brooklyn. The commission, urged by State's Attorney Lorin W. Willis, will aid a grand jury in September. Fair allegedly caused a jail disturbance on Aug. 23 and was sent to Fairfield State Hospital for observation before return to jail. Sheriff Edward A. Platt and two guards were injured. Fair had fired a rifle into an apartment at 620 Fairfield Avenue, killing Simmons, then was captured in Woodbridge Township, NJ.
Paul Mantz flew a bright red P-51 Mustang from New York to Burbank California in seven hours flat, trimming 28 minutes off the previous propeller-powered aircraft record. The feat occurred at 4 26 p m PST with Mantz past the control tower shortly after arrival, continuing the Bendix Trophy legacy.
