Storms lashed Danielson and Bridgeport regions causing damaged homes and scattered debris. Lightning strikes, fallen trees, and high winds disrupted power as residents reported shattered roofs and localized destruction with emergency crews responding in the aftermath.
Two thousand veterans in Rudgeport cashed their terminal leave bonds on the first day permitted for immediate cashing under the new law. Banks reported steady, not frenzied, activity as ex servicemen exchanged bonds for funds to cover mortgages, taxes, and expenses. A traffic accident outside Lafayette Street injured a 61 year old woman, Mrs Claudia Sprochnie, who was treated at the scene and later discharged. The ambulance driver reported turning onto Lafayette Street when the collision occurred, injuring others with no fatalities.
Federal Judge John Knox amended the Saw Mill River Parkway toll order near York to allow receipts only on request. County officials had planned universal toll receipts, but the ruling led to a delay while toll booths may display notices about receipts. Four New Jersey motorists sued, claiming the tolls were illegal and began last month.
Rudgeport public schools resume this morning after a long summer break, with about 20 000 students expected in their desks for the third year of the consolidated system. Principal and supervisor meetings were held at Central High, and Supt Jeffery noted extensive summer renovations and improved teaching positions.
Nineteen Japanese were convicted by a U S military tribunal at Guam for torturing to death 10 American prisoners of war in 1944. Capt Hiroshi Iwanami, former fleet surgeon, ordered the executions using bacteria, dynamite, strangulation, bayonets and bamboo spears. Eighteen others, from chief petty officers to lieutenant commander, were convicted of fatally torturing the men. The two month hearing, led by Rear Adm Arthur G Robinson, was described as one of the Pacific navy’s most spectacular trials.

Aldermen Lindmark prodded a representative meeting with United Illuminating Co as Mayor McLevy directed arrangements. The council also asked for an extra building inspector and approved sewer work bids on Reservoir Avenue.
In Quito Col Carlos Mancheno chief of Ecuador's de facto government for about a week resigned and fled after seeking asylum at the Venezuelan embassy. He sent his resignation to Ecuador's three major parties as counter revolutionaries closed in. Late tonight residents demonstrated in the streets shouting for a new constitution.
Washington reports the United States rejected Moscow’s bid to veto British American economic revival plans for western Germany. A State Department note said the U S cannot accept the thesis that nothing can be done without Soviet consent. It also accused the Soviet Union of failing to honor Potsdam 1945 agreement to treat Germany as a single economic unit. Lovett sent the reply to Soviet envoy Tsaraphkin.
Stamford AFL convention opens with a split over endorsing political candidates. Two rival resolutions ignite a floor battle as leaders push a range of issues including Taft Hartley law sales tax cost of living and housing. The Norwalk Central Labor union proposes scrapping endorsements and abolishing the nonpartisan Political Action Committee.
The 1,000,000 non-operating railroad workers were awarded a 12 cent hourly wage boost by a six member arbitration board, with carriers estimating payroll costs rising by about 438- million annually. Union leaders had sought 20 cents but agreed to the arbitration result, while Burlington president Ralph Budd warned higher payrolls could raise railroad rates.
The carrier Midway at Norfolk Navy Yard launched V-2 rockets in a top secret test at sea. Naval spokesmen refused details, but observers noted a large number of high ranking officers aboard for the firing.
Derby public schools will open on schedule and sessions will continue for at least two weeks. The Derby Teachers League adopted a resolution urging teachers to return Wednesday morning while salary arrangements for 1947-48 are awaited, with the Board of Education extending thanks and support.
US Secretary of State George C Marshall led 19 of 21 American republics at the inter American conference in Rio de Janeiro as delegates signed the mutual defense treaty. The pact binds signatories to treat an attack on any nation as an attack on all and allows joint defense actions within a defined security zone.
