Stevenson to Advise on NATO as Ike Signals Meeting

Adlai Stevenson arrives in Washington to assist the Eisenhower administration on Atlantic alliance matters and warns of a possible communist economic breakthrough. Six Jets Complete 10600 Mile Nonstop Air Route

Six B52 jet bombers concluded a 10,600 mile nonstop flight from the United States to Buenos Aires and back, averaging 560 miles per hour. Brig. Gen. William K. Martin said the mission functioned perfectly. The formation flew from Homestead Air Force Base, reaching Zceiza airport in Argentina for reviews before returning.

Two Charged With Assault in Slugging of Merchant

Two men were arrested after an attempted robbery of Merritt Food Market owner Joseph Ricca. Thomas Wilkins 26 of 68 Garden street and Cornelius Hartley 24 of 518 Main street face assault and breach of the peace charges. Each is held on 10000 bail. Ricca 52 of 195 Mary avenue Stratford was slugged with a lug wrench and hospitalized with head injuries but in fairly good condition at St Vincent's Hospital.

Warden Ties 10 Prisoners to Sit Down Strike

Warden Mark S. Richmond said 10 suspected leaders of Friday’s passive sit down strike at the State Prison are in administrative segregation. He warned group pressure and demonstrations would not be tolerated and those responsible would be punished. Police identified no names, but described a confrontation in which a man named Wilkins allegedly struck an officer and fled, with 10 prisoners held pending further action.

Woman Hurt as Bus Topples East Side Pole

Mrs. Millie DeMaio 60 of 324 Wilmot Avenue stepped from a CR&L bus at East Main and Stratford and was struck by a street light pole toppled by the bus. Ambulance delayed half an hour. she was treated and sent home. A green Ford carrying eight youths fled the scene. The pole topple was blamed on an unidentified car forcing the bus.

Driver hunted after hotel crash injures Stratford boy

Anthony Salerno fourteen of 86 Oak Street was injured when an auto mounted a walk and crashed into the Stratfield Hotel main entrance. He is listed in fair condition at St Vincent's hospital while police seek the unknown Stratford driver who fled the scene.

Fire guts Hotel Coffee Shop on Fairfield Avenue

A fire damaged the kitchen of the Barnum Coffee Shop at the Hotel on Fairfield Avenue around 1 25 a m Sunday causing over 5000 in damages. Firefighter Michael Stenoha aged 42 was badly hurt and is in St Vincent's Hospital in fair condition. Three other firefighters were overcome by smoke. The blaze started in a grease gut and spread quickly. staff fought flames but did not call the fire department until the fire grew. The coffee shop will be closed for two or three days for repairs.

Violence Claims Six Lives Across State Over Weekend

Six people died in separate incidents Saturday night and Sunday across Connecticut. Victims include Serfino Oliveto, 66, of Waterbury fatally struck near West Haven Veterans Hospital, and a 54-year-old Bridgeport man who died under a truck near the Devon side of the Washington Bridge. A Bridgeport man ended his life following a police pursuit and a Stamford teenager died in a Saturday crash after a wild chase. A collapsing chimney and a derailment also noted.

Weekend burglaries hit Bridgeport stores and homes

Police reported a spate of break ins across Bridgeport over the weekend with the Eveready Supply at 805 Housatonic Avenue looted of 200 dollars in cash and stamps, a confectionery at 423 Bostwick Avenue taken for about 9 dollars, Park City Grocery at 624 Park Avenue 40 dollars, and Rainbow Fruit Market at 945 East Main Street missing cash. A home on Marina Village was entered via an unlocked window with a camera valued at 100 dollars and a pistol among missing items. Police say 17 similar safes have been robbed since September 1, totaling 9539 dollars.
