John A. DeRosa, former Trumbull town treasurer, is jailed on 15 counts of embezzlement from Aug 1, 1957 to May 8, 1958. Authorities say no cash shortfall exists. DeRosa resigned two weeks earlier amid health and business pressures.
Stamford man Anthony Solinini, 48, charged with larceny and aggravated assault after shoplifting nylon stockings and brandishing a knife at a Ben Franklin store in Westport. Police fired warning shots. Solinini fled, was chased by officers, and arrested near the Vanlear Woodward Building. A pistol and shells found in his car along with other stolen merchandise from multiple towns.
Official weather data shows mostly cloudy conditions with warm humid air and afternoon thunderstorms, clearing and cooler by evening with high near 85. Tonight fair and cooler with low around 65. In Hartford on July 25 AP reports a crowd of onlookers watching Paul Sherman compete in a feature contest under a chestnut tree. A squirrel dislodged a chestnut causing a bubble to burst, ending the event and leaving a boy disappointed as observers cheered for the new champion Jacoby on Bridge.
Daniel Shaughnessy seven a resident of Harrison Street was rushed to Danbury Hospital in fair condition after falling from a 15 foot high Rog ers Park playground slide. Witnesses said he jumped from the top to gain speed but missed the slide and struck a support pipe before landing. His father rode with him to the hospital.
The Second Connecticut Pops Concert drew more than 6000 people to Fairfield University field last night blending humor by Herb Shriner and folk songs by George Alexander with Ghost Town stories. Gustave Haenschen led the Pops Symphony as guest conductor and a Cowboy Rhapsody opened the program.
In Beirut a three hour clash between Lebanese rebels and pro-government civilians near Basta left a woman and child dead and a bystander wounded after a taxi rammed a rebel checkpoint. The fighting followed sharp political moves by Saeb Salam who said parliament cannot name a new president while Chamoun and foreign troops remain. American troops total about 4,000 Army and 6,300 Marines as U.S. and coalition ships continue operations in Lebanon.
Stratford residents Janet Walby and Robert Andres Jr. were found in Lebanon Kentucky. State Police reported both youths missing since June 20 21 and 26 respectively. Parents Mr and Mrs Walby and Mr and Mrs Andres were notified and en route to Lebanon. State police gave no details on how the pair was located.
Moscow warns Turkey against attacking Iraq amid reports of Turkish plans and diplomatic notes. Turkish UN observers dismiss alarm, saying no attack is planned, while Moscow cautions Turkey on consequences of any armed move in the region.
President Eisenhower warned Nikita Khrushchev the United States will not be forced into an emergency summit. He said the United Nations Security Council must establish ground rules, decide if a summit is desired, and set date and makeup. If Khrushchev agrees, Eisenhower would attend heads of government talks. The White House said July 28 is too soon.
Secretary of State Dulles departed for Bonn and London with several State Department officials. President Eisenhower sent good wishes as Columbine II carried the delegation. Dulles would meet Chancellor Adenauer in Bonn, then discuss with British and Baghdad Pact officials in London and attend Baghdad Pact Council meetings as an observer before returning to Washington Tuesday morning.
Grayton R. Evarts of Norwalk a banker and conservator of Anthony Lombardo faces embezzlement charges in a Fairfield County case. He allegedly diverted 15 586 08 from Lombardo s estate between January 3 1952 and July 1958 and was jailed on a Superior Court bench warrant with a 5 000 cash bond posted by Marcello P Venner. Arraignment planned for September term. Evarts treasurer of Fairfield County Savings Bank and not represented by counsel.
In Kenora Ontario two float planes collided about 20 feet above Lake of the Woods and plunged inverted. All 14 aboard escaped serious injury. passengers were U S tourists from St. Louis and Illinois families. two Canadian pilots were unhurt aside from minor injuries. Boats ferried victims ashore. some husbands later traveled to Ball Lake to view the wreckage.
A Pan American DC-7 with 45 aboard landed safely at Argentia Newfoundland after a runaway propeller forced an emergency over the Atlantic. Capt Robert P Postlewaite of Wilton Conn reported all 36 passengers and nine crew calm during the crisis. The plane had left Idlewild for Lisbon when the trouble began then re routed to Argentia.
