Officials Believe Quiggle Jumped Overboard in a Fit of Low Mood

SAN FRANCISCO July 24 AP Rear Adm Lynne C Quiggle 52 disappeared at sea from the liner President Cleveland and apparently jumped overboard in a fit of mental low mood the liner s master said today From the information I know I can see no other answer to it Commodore H D Ehman told newsmen when the liner docked from Honolulu It seems reasonable that he left us in a fit of mental low mood A Navy Board of Investigation headed by Rear Adm John Q Owsley Medical Corps started a formal inquiry into Quiggle s disappearance from the ship at an early hour yesterday morning about 800 miles off San Francisco Mrs Quiggle reported to Commodore Ehman about 7 15 m Wednesday that her husband was missing She said he left their cabin about 4 a m and she started a search of the ship as soon as she could get dressed The commodore reluctantly confirmed reports from outer sources on the ship that Quiggle had kissed his wife and left the cabin after telling her You ll be better off a widow Appeared Tired Cmdr Daniel J Harkins USNR told newsmen he had observed at frequent shipboard activities continued on page twelve

Wine destroyed at Wordin dump after liquor warehouse fire

After a July 1 fire at a liquor warehouse, nearly 5,000 bottles of spirits mostly wine were destroyed by local and state health officials at the Wordin avenue dump. Health officials Dr H P Dinan Jr and inspector Kenneth Crane spent over two weeks assessing damage to bottles from L Nier man Lavit Co 849 State street. About 40 dozen bottle cases were deemed unsalvageable and crushed by a bulldozer. A liquor salvage company is expected to buy and relabel salvageable stock.

Senate Appropriations Boost Defense Funds in 1959 Bill

Senate Appropriations Committee voted to give Eisenhower the full requested defense funds plus 1.2 billion more, with 40.032 billion for the year. Hartford Junkyard Fire Sparks Magnesium Explosion

In Hartford three boys aged 7 9 and 12 admitted starting a wood pile blaze that spread to titanium and magnesium at a scrap yard. The magnesium exploded wrecking a concrete blockhouse and blocking two New Haven Railroad mainline tracks. No injuries reported.

Skate Rips Tender At New London Base

The nuclear submarine Skate bumped the tender Fulton while pulling up alongside it at a pier. One of Skates propellers was damaged and the tender’s hull was cut by a 2 by 12 inch hole causing minor flooding. No injuries were reported and temporary repairs were made.
