U. S. Cruiser Sunk by Sub Off Fire Island

News from New York dated July 19 reports German submarines active off the north Atlantic coast. The sinking of a U S cruiser is announced with 1 187 crew reported rescued as destroyers planes and patrol boats sweep the area. Coastwise vessels were ordered closer to shore amid ongoing raid measures.

Soldiers Welcome Home Donated by Edward W Harral

Edward W Harral of 123 Harrison Street, Bridgeport, a noted philanthropist, donates a home on Golden Hill for visiting soldiers and sailors. Justice Wheeler and the Bridgeport War Bureau arrange use with seven upstairs bedrooms for about 20 cots and lower floors for reception and billiard rooms. No immediate furnishings planned. public donations expected to cover needs for the War Bureau gift.

Soissons Taken By Allied Forces Reported

Washington July 19 Allied forces reportedly captured Soissons with 30,000 Germans as Franco American troops advance between the Aisne and Marne. Officials said no confirmation yet. The offensive opened at 5.30 with tanks and heavy fire, advancing about two kilometres amid fierce fighting and German attempts to halt the advance. Several towns captured, Germans withdrawing to rear defenses, while pressure continues south of the Marne and 17,000 prisoners and 360 guns reportedly taken.

Eastern League to Close Tomorrow Due to Ruling

Hartford July 19 The Eastern League will suspend the season Sunday after Secretary Baker ruled baseball non essential. Hartford Springfield Providence will finish tomorrow Worcester plays Bridgeport New London at Wallerby. The decision affects professional players and may alter draft rules to include entertainers.

Governor Grants Rent Board Wide Power in Letter 1

The governor assigns broad authority to a Rent Adjustment committee led by Judge Banks to suspend summary eviction proceedings and set reasonable rents for nonpayment of increased rents. Branch Libraries Open Next Week in Bridgeport City

Mayor Wilson will help inaugurate two North Kind and Bridgeport Public Library branches next week. North Kind on North Main will open July 21 at 7 p.m. and Bridgeport on Kos South Street will open July 26 at 7 p.m. An informal reception will follow with the mayor and library board hosts. Citizens, especially nearby residents, are invited to inspect the new modern buildings supervised by Public Librarian Henry N. Sanborn, stocked with many books.

Germans Near New York Sink San Diego Cruiser

Survivors say the United States cruiser San Diego was torpedoed or mined ten miles off Fire Island. The ship stayed afloat thirty six minutes after the blast before sinking. Steamers rushed to rescue with lifeboats and Long Island hospitals treated the wounded. The cause remains officially undetermined in Washington.

San Diego Sunk After Torpedo Hit Near Periscope Fire

Survivors from the cruiser San Diego reported heavy explosions and gunfire after a torpedo or mine struck amidships blowing the boilers. 35 sailors landed at a port with six officers, including the captain and first officer. 1,156 officers and men were aboard when two steamships carried them to an unnamed port. Most were in good condition with no injuries reported.
