U S and Canadian hostages total 50, rebels hold 50 captives as two consular officials sent to secure releases may themselves be seized. Barnum Festival Dance Attracts 1000 At Ritz Ballroom

More than 1000 attendees packed the Ritz Ballroom for the Barnum Festival’s 10th annual dance last night. Festival royalty and Mayor Tedesco praised planners, while co chairs Verne King and Ernie Ferrari introduced sponsors and Kenneth Maloney. Ringmaster Raine received a large photo as thanks, and Miss Connecticut contenders were among the gala guests with sailors from the USS Cotton in attendance.

Winslow Quits Milford Post After Board Rejection

Assistant superintendent of schools Robert B. Winslow resigned tonight amid disputes over his 1958 59 salary. He told reporters he left the door open for a raise but the Milford Board of Education did not reconsider.

Mrs Goldsmith Aids New York Dog Pack Owner

Mrs Martha Hinrichson of upper West Side was ordered by Magistrate Walter Bayer to thin her 49 dogs within a month and report by July 31. Mrs Harold Sanford Goldsmith of Westport, VP of the National Dog Welfare Guild, offered aid and 750 pounds of dog food from Connecticut owners to help relocate the animals.

City lists third 08 polio case

A Bridgeport boy about one year old was admitted to Englewood yesterday as the city’s third polio victim of 1958. Dr. H. P. Dinan Jr said the child contracted polio due to missing follow up shots after the first vaccine last fall. The patient has leg paralysis and was moved from Bridgeport hospital after four days of observation. The city’s other cases include a three-year-old under treatment at Englewood and an eight-year-old who is in outpatient care at the Crippled Children’s clinic.

New Wrinkle Tested For Subways in N Y

The transit authority tests a three month trial of coin operated dry cleaning lockers at a Brooklyn subway station with a private firm. If successful, 487 stations would install the units for passengers to leave dirty clothes and return with dry cleaned garments.

Mercury Hits 91 Degrees in Bridgeport Heat Wave

Summer heat battered Bridgeport as the thermometer soared to 91 degrees at 3 pm with a 26 point jump from morning. About 25,000 people visited Seaside Park on a July 4 workday and 8,000 cars remained in the lot past 9 pm. Forecasters expect similar readings with higher humidity and possible relief by Saturday showers.

Pay Boost Given Rubber Workers

United Rubber Workers, Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., and B F Goodrich Co reached an eight cent hourly pay raise and delayed pension and insurance changes until next spring. The agreement covers about 33,000 production workers and lifts the average wage to 2.60 dollars per hour.

Train crash injures thirty at Union Station Alexandria

An AP report from Alexandria says about 30 people were injured when a Chesapeake and Ohio passenger train rear collided a Sea Board Air Line train discharging passengers at Union Station. Four were admitted for observation. 22 released after first aid. Engineer William W. Roberts said brakes failed, speed eight to 10 miles an hour.

Fire at Lavit Co. liquor warehouse on State St

Fire swept through the Lavit company wholesale liquor warehouse at 849-851 State Street just before 5 pm causing heavy losses. Liquor valued near one million dollars burned as firemen battled the blaze. Two firefighters were injured and hospitalized. investigators planned a full probe next day.
