Fox to file $1 million suit against Adams and foes

Business promoter John Fox said he would sue presidential assistant Sherman Adams and others for a million dollars, claiming they lied and made malicious accusations. The move followed three days of testimony to a House subcommittee amid heated exchanges and denials from Fox and his critics.

Milford Upholds Employee Firing in Town Meeting

In a historic session the Milford Town Meeting voted 27 to 9 to uphold the town manager’s dismissal of former sanitation department employee Funaro. The 29 year old father of three was discharged for disrespect for the public and town property after a Merwin Avenue resident alleged abusive conduct. Funaro argued the accuser was abusive. the hearing drew about 100 attendees.

Woman Beats Briscoe in Race For Dublin Lord Mayor Post

DUBLIN June 30 AP The Scots born widow Catherine Byrne won the Dublin Lord Mayor post on the fourth ballot defeating Robert Briscoe, a Jewish community leader and former mayor, by 23 to 17 as the heavy chain of office was placed on her shoulders. Byrne, in her late 50s, has two grown daughters.

Alaska Statehood Senate Vote Sets Path to Union

The Senate approved Alaska statehood 64 to 20, with President Eisenhower backing the move. Fairfield man dies after Bloomsburg crash

James Watson Woolever 63 of 16 Maine Ave Fairfield died in Bloomsburg hospital after injuries from a June 21 auto crash six miles north of Bloomsburg. He was superintendent of Lorraine Novelty Manufacturing in Bridgeport and died with his wife Phyllis Woolver at his side. He lived in Bridgeport over 15 years and is survived by seven children and a sister in Kansas.

Bridgeport Driver Becomes First to Forfeit Bond in Traffic Court

Francisco Torres, 21, of 484 State Street, forfeited a $93 cash bond for failing to appear on a charge of driving without a license. Judge Milton E. Reinhard Jr ordered capture on a $250 bond to ensure appearance. Police to detain him until court date following Justice Daly's ruling on bond forfeiture cases. Prosecutor Thomas McManus noted Torres was arrested June 6 at Railroad and Park avenues after attempting to run a signal.

Pawtucket Gunman Kills Two Detectives in Siege

In Pawtucket Rhode Island June 30 a heavily armed former mental patient Robert Genereux 35 barricaded himself in a bathroom and shot Detectives Lt. Thomas Truesdale 68 and Emil Newberg 58 as they tried to take him into custody. After a five hour standoff police used tear gas and machine gun fire to seize Genereux. The detectives died at Rhode Island Hospital.
