In Saigon area reports describe Cong rockets overrunning an allied airbase during ongoing probes. Southwest of Saigon Vietnamese forces uncover a cache including 127 Soviet rockets and multiple arms, plus 51 Viet Cong bodies. Viet Cong with automatic rifles attack a Vietnamese checkpoint four miles from Saigon but are repelled.
Firefighters from Companies One and Four tackled a blaze at Fairfield University on the Round Hill Road campus near Bellarmine Hall. A furnace motor fire at 68 Windsor Drive caused about $100 in damage, and a nonfire oil-tank leak appeared at 115 Dwight Street. no injuries reported.
Wilton AP reports a blaze consumed about 10 acres of woods near Route 7 Friday before firefighters from three communities brought it under control. Numerous small brush and grass fires were reported as the area had no snow cover and very little precipitation this month.
Washington reports the Commerce Department ordered a copper import freeze to assure refined copper for defense needs after a longshoremen strike and boycott. An International Association spokesman said the order to members was a clerical error and should not have been issued. Two large cable firms with 12,000 workers plan shutdowns as imports are blocked, citing copper shortages.
Mrs. Muriel James was sworn in by Circuit Court Judge Alfred Toscano in the Underwood building as a second circuit court stenographer. A Monroe resident, she is a Connecticut Business Institute graduate, with students from the institute present to observe the oath and learn how the court system operates daily.
Circuit Court Judge Alfred Toscano imposed a total fine of 150 dollars on Thaddeus H Hale age 34 of 589 East Main street after he pled guilty to keeping a house of ill fame and liquor with intent to sell. Prosecutor John P Evans said Hale was arrested Feb 9 during a Bridgeport Tactical squad raid on the East Main street address where liquor and several girls were found.
The Defense Department raises March draft quota to 41 000 and sets April at 48 000, first Marine draft use since 1968, with about 50 000 National Guardsmen and Reservists eyed to rebuild U S forces amid Vietnam pressures. Gen Wheeler tours Vietnam, signaling possible higher troop commitments.
The Board of Building Commissioners issued permits for several projects this week including interior alterations at 161 North Avenue for Dr Harold F Linder valued at 2500 dollars. A Stratfield hotel fire alarm drew four engine companies and police to the ninth floor, where heavy smoke blocked entry. Bellhop George Dean woke guests, including Senator Lee Metcalf, as detectives joined the investigation and six ninth‑floor rooms were later deemed vacant.

GOP leaders announce support for Trojanowski not seeking another term. A 44 year old insurance and real estate businessman, Trojanowski is a Towns committee member and former party finance chairman. He has been linked to state senate bids and city clerk races, and led the East Side Republican club. He resides at 70 Amos Street and served with the Seabees in World War II before his July appointment to the Board of Fire Commissioners by Mayor Curran.
Officials will meet Monday with D. Nobili city housing officer to investigate complaints from 23 South End residents about deplorable housing conditions. The protest last Thursday at Bridgeport Community Developments Inc. office prompted plans for a formal review with ABCD South End coordinator Juan Vargas and Deputy Director Rev. William Johnson. Tenants cited missing baths and fixtures, cracked walls, and lack of heat.
City officials faced a 54 hour session as sanitation workers strike for higher pay and union recognition. A two family dwelling at 100 Cowles Street suffered heavy damage in a fire reported at 3 20 p m yesterday. Harley W. Magee, 72, ex-newsman and longtime Famous Artists Schools executive, died in Rochester Minnesota. He helped found the school in 1948 as its first salaried employee and stockholder, held posts from personnel director to office manager, set up a European division, and served as vice president before retiring in 1962. Services will be held Monday in Decorah Iowa. Magee had earlier been editor of Popular Mechanics and headed the AP Chicago bureau. He moved to Decorah about a year ago.
AP reports FCC examiner Thomas H. Donahue recommends approval for Fitzgerald C. Smith trading as Southington Broadcasters to operate a standard radio station in Southington Connecticut on 990 kilocycles at 500 watts daytime. The decision was announced Friday. Martin Poulin infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Poulin of 28 Stoneybrook Road died Wednesday at Yale-New Haven hospital. Services were held yesterday at St. Michael's cemetery with Wilmot West and Goulding funeral home in charge. Survivors include parents, a brother Andrew, a sister Linda, paternal grandfather Adelai de Poulin of Winterski Vermont, and paternal grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Domin of Dickson City Pennsylvania.
A Weicker led inquiry at ABCD Golden Hill central office included Edwin C. Kepler and Rev William Johnson with ABCD officials and anti poverty officials. An 18 year old Lee High School basketball player Steven Alexander collapsed after playing basketball at the YMCA and died at Yale-New Haven Hospital. Police said he had showered and was resting when he collapsed and did not regain consciousness.
