Miners killed in blast at India's modern coal mine

An explosion in Calcutta's latest coal mine killed at least 183 miners last night and flooded two neighboring mines, causing about 35 additional deaths among workers.

Officials push river route for Route 25 plan

City officials and business leaders urged routing Route 25 along the Pequonnock River bed as part of a North-South highway realignment from Bridgeport through Trumbull Monroe and Newtown. Cape Canaveral Fla Feb 2 AP reports the Air Force launched the Atlas ICBM dubbed The Beast in a high Atlantic flight test. After a strong start the missile exploded two minutes and 70 seconds after liftoff, with no reason given for the blowup.

Hartford February 2 AP The Manufacturers Association of Connecticut denounces state Labor Dept unemployment totals as unreliable. Ford notes 90,600 unemployed in the week ending Feb 8 and questions the method used to reach this figure.

Derby Payroll Bandit Grabs Briefcase Full of Mail

Derby police report a holdup at Charlton Press where a masked man wrestled with Geno Balsamo for a payroll briefcase containing only mail. Balsamo, 45, of New Haven, was treated at Griffin Hospital for scalp wounds after a brief struggle in the snow. The thief fled in a companion car toward Ansonia. Charlton Press had suffered a similar payroll robbery about three years earlier.

Tunisia expels French consuls amid border tension

Tunisian police expelled French consuls tonight from their posts. Three consuls arrived escorted by police and were released in Tunis. Two others from Gafsa and Gabes spent the night in Sfax and were due at the French embassy in the morning. Tension rose as French troops surrounded a village on the Libyan border and a French military truck was destroyed by a mine.

Youth 18 Kills His Father in North End Tragedy

Eighteen year old Robert Lathrop is jailed in the county custody after stabbing his 58 year old father Thomas at 3 am in their 100 Acorn street home. Police say the youth acted in defense of his mother Letitia during a quarrel that arose from drinking over the previous weeks. Lathrop died at St Vincent's hospital after surgery. The family was questioned as investigators piece together the domestic scene.
