Cold loosens grip on Bridgeport area thaw continues

Bridgeport shivers ease as temperatures rise to around 30 with sun from Stratford observers. A low near one degree above zero previously and a 27 degree high yesterday are noted. Snow possible this weekend but not yet quantified. Public Works Deputy Richard Johnson says snow removal remains on schedule as sun and heat cause melting. puddles freeze at night requiring sanding. Crews continued snow cleanup and planned trash collection today and tomorrow in missed areas.

Federal Reserve Lowers Bank Reserves to Boost Lending

The Federal Reserve cut reserve requirements by half a percentage point, freeing about 3 billion dollars in lending capacity. Murphy named to mediate Tunisia Paris rift

The United States appoints Robert Murphy as trouble shooter to mediate the dispute between France and Tunisia. Solons Hit Filter-Tip Claims Of Cigarette Manufacturers

Washington February 19 AP report says a House Government Operations committee found most filter tipped cigarettes carry equal or higher nicotine than nonfiltered brands. The panel accuses manufacturers of deceiving the public and faulted the FTC for not policing ads. It notes 49 percent of 1957 cigarette sales were filter tips, up from 14 percent in 1952.
