Agreement Reached On Tentative Pact By Sikorsky Union

Production workers at Sikorsky Aircraft plants in Bridgeport and Stratford reached a tentative labor contract after a 14 and a half hour negotiating session in Hartford. The deal, awaiting ratification by Local 877 of the United Auto Workers, covers about 6,500 workers and follows a previous strike threat over pay seniority and benefits.

Five story building collapse traps New York firemen

At least two firemen died and four more were trapped when a five story structure collapsed amid a mass of burning wreckage in lower Manhattan. Fire Commissioner Cavanagh vowed full search with a hundred men at work around the clock. The building housed paper and twine firms and is believed to have caught fire on the fifth floor. Authorities withheld names of the missing pending bail calls.

Milford Man Beaten in Parking Lot Mistaken Attack

Milford insurance agent Alexander Wels, 52, was attacked in a Stratford parking lot near 1770 Barnum Avenue. He was treated for facial injuries and released. Police later detained a suspect, Schomacha, 33, who admitted the assault but claimed it was a mistake.

Darien Boy Drowns After Ice Breaks on Pond

Henry Backhurst seven year old son of Mrs Helen Backhurst of 11 Egmund Street drowned after falling through ice on a pond near Hoyt Street in Darien. His eight year old brother Donald summoned help as workers searched the pond, pulling him from the water after about 48 minutes.

Miss Mendel Quits School Post Board Names Her Acting Chief

A citywide public hearing at Burroughs Public Library drew about 300 citizens supporting general pay raises for city employees. The Civil Service Commission plans to decide today which Griffenhagen plan schedules to recommend to the City Council, with Mayor Tedesco to consider next. One speaker opposed, ex-city employee Gordon Duffy, while chairman Stephen Jankura praised the orderly hearing and pledged to seek a plan beneficial to administration, employees, and the public.

Jail escapees take hostage family in California

Two armed fugitives Bartholemew Blackburn 23 and Ronnie Rhonemus 21 held a four person family at gunpoint for 23 hours in their home after escaping a San Luis Obispo jail. They bound and gagged a second couple and fled in a stolen car, likely heading for the Mexican border. Police issued a danger alert as the pair remained at large.

BHA Refuses to Recognize Union for Employees

Phyllis Marie Whitney of 50 Pearsall Way was crowned Sweetheart Queen at the University of Bridgeport Sweetheart Ball held at the Ritz ballroom. About 1,100 students alumni and friends attended as the Pat Dorn orchestra provided music. Clarence D. L. Ropp dean of the College of Arts and Science presented the crown. Whitney previously represented Bassick High School in royal court activities.

Budget Revenues Cut As Sales Tax Drops Hartford

State sales tax receipts for the three months ending December 31 1957 totaled 19.54 million dollars, well short of the 24.5 million estimate to balance the budget. Tax Commissioner John L. Sullivan reported the shortfall from the prior year and Governor Ribicoff said the decline was anticipated to curb state spending by ten percent.

Bridgeport Board Keeps Augusta Mendel as Acting School Head

In a unanimous vote the Bridgeport Board of Education names Augusta Mendel acting superintendent after ruling she lacks nine academic credits for the permanent post. Mendel resigned as permanent superintendent and will serve until June 30 unless a qualified candidate is chosen. The state Education Commissioner warned that acts could be questioned and state aid jeopardized if requirements aren’t met.
