Florida Faces Yet Another Freeze Threat to Crops

Florida warned of a new Friday morning freeze as a cold outbreak grips the South. Meteorologists urged precautions for citrus groves and growing plants while small craft warnings span Gulf to Atlantic coasts. The storm covered much of the Deep South with record snow in Tallahassee and across northern Florida, jeopardizing vegetables, citrus, and cotton in the Rio Grande Valley amid three prior cold spells.

Governor Ribicoff calls a Connecticut special session

Connecticut Governor Ribicoff announced a special session of the General Assembly to address unemployment. About 90,000 people or over eight percent of the labor force are jobless, with benefits running out, prompting a plea to act to sustain the state economy. Loss Heavy In Erie Fire

Explosion punctuated a February Erie warehouse fire in subfreezing 24 degree temps. The M. W. Irwin building at 2001 West 12th Street, containing televisions and high octane drums, burned with 100 foot flames. Estimated damage ranged from two to eight million dollars. inventory valued at seven million. Deputy Chief John North led 120 firefighters as they fought the blaze, calling it the worst in memory and noting unknown contents pending inventory.

State Aide Opposes Year-Round Schools In Connecticut

Dr. Maurice J. Ross of the Connecticut Department of Education told the Southeastern Connecticut Association of Boards of Education that most interscholastic sports, bus services, driver training, and the hot lunch program should be abandoned if year-round schooling is pursued. He favored retaining tennis and volleyball while urging a longer school day and year, cautioning against overemphasis on science and urging well-rounded education including politics, diplomacy, and theology.

Bartender Shot During Maloney's Restaurant Hold-Up

Three men posing as customers robbed Maloney's restaurant at 308 Iranistan Avenue near Gregory Street at about 1 a.m. They shot the bartender in the arm and escaped with the day's receipts. Phillip J. McKenna of 59 Renmel Street was taken to St Vincent's hospital. his condition was not serious. Police scoured the area for three gunmen, described as tall and thin: all are Negro, two with a .22 rifle reported in use.

Plane crash at Palm Springs injures seven

A Western Airlines Convair transport crash landed after takeoff from Palm Springs. Eighteen passengers and three crew escaped before flames destroyed the plane. Seven injured were treated at a hospital, with two serious injuries including John Pernicano of San Diego.

Three Die in Carbon Monoxide Tragedy at Ash Street

A husband, wife, and their six year old son were found dead in a third floor apartment at 274 Ash Street after carbon monoxide fumes from a defective flue filled the home. Friends forced entry about 7:30 p.m. and found the family with a television still on. Police and medical examiners linked the deaths to monoxide poisoning.

Edesco names labor advisor in city administration

Mayor Tedesco announced Anthony Arlo, president of Local 227, IUE, at Singer Manufacturing, as temporary labor relations adviser. Arlo will review grievances of city workers and suggest steps for a permanent grievance adjustment program, with union input and without pay. A 15 year old Bridgeport youth was acquitted of breaking and entering at the Dorset company on 1862 State street extension after testifying he confessed while hungry and homeless to secure jail time. Police said his tale contained misleading details but some facts matched the real corset company break.

Boy Found Dead After 300-Foot Cliff Rescue on San Gorgonio

A 13-year-old boy, Donald Burns, died after a 25 hour rescue on San Gorgonio Mountain 11,485 feet high. John Matthews of the Sierra Madre unit reached him as rescuers from sheriff's deputies and Air Force crews battled harsh conditions. A helicopter lowered a litter to the cliff tip to recover the body amid snow and a waterfall pool.
