Board Accepts 383 Mill Tax In First Session

In a six hour budget session the Board of Apportionment and Taxation approved a preliminary budget of 22 0413 million and a tax rate of 38.3 mills for the new fiscal year starting April 1. The rate is 0.4 mill above last year’s 37.9 mills and the budget is up 1,168,556 from the prior 21,601,857. The board plans to add about 200,000 more to Welfare to handle rising relief, potentially pushing the final rate to about 38.7 mills. Final budget and tax revisions occur Feb. 2 with Welfare increases possibly granted then. The grand list stands at 47,660,875, near final. The board trimmed police funding, reduced firemen changes, and kept general government costs slightly above the comptroller’s proposal. A $300 typewriter was cut from the treasurer’s budget.
